sway bar bushing: under load or not?

I am going to replace the rear sway bar bushings in the near future. The car is making those funny muffled empty can noises while going over some rough patches.

I don't have a garage so have to do it in my parking spot. No floor jack either.

The plan is to jack the car up on one side, use a safety jack, remove the wheel and then access the bushing to replace it.

Is that the recommended way to do it? I wonder if I can do this without removing the wheels. Also, is the bushing any easier/difficult to remove when the wheel is hanging while jacked up (unloaded) as opposed to when it not jacked up (loaded)?

I started off with replacing the sway bar bushing. Since that did not work, it left me to look at the struts, mounts and the links.

Upon examining the links, I saw that I could easily wiggle the link about its long axis .. likely sign of link gone bad. Took a decision to replace those. Seems to have worked so far.

NB: This doesn't mean the clunking noise couldn't be due to somthing else, I am reporting what changed with links R&R.

On a similar note, it seems like the car's front strust mounts may need to be replaced. However, since the front links also seem to be in a similar wiggly shape, I am going to replace those as well and see how far that R&R takes. If I still get noises, I probably will go on with replacing the struts and strut mounts .... we shall see.
