So I searched through existing threads and found nothing so here goes...
My 91 DLX 4x4 is missing the tow hooks that bolt? to the frame under the front bumper maybe the PO had a brush guard at some point. My question is if I am able to find a couple to put on from a salvage yard or whatever, are they really worth a damn for getting yanked out of a mud hole (in the rare event that I would get stuck haha)? Any suggestions for what strength of bolts I should use for them? How bout inexpensive alternatives to the hooks? My pickup is stock height with the stock bumper and the valance is trimmed down about a foot on each end so it only protects the radiator from gravel and whatnot (a custom mod I did which looks pretty good I think maybe Ill put up some pics some day). Anyway thanks in advance!

The tow hooks are strong enough to the point where the thickness of the frame would probably be the weakest link. They will be strong enough to pull the weight of your truck but I wouldn't recommend snap-pulling (but then again, I wouldn't ever recommend snap-pulling :p:)

I would just grab one from a junkyard and call it good

3rd, and you want 8.8 or 10.2 grade bolts, as this is a japanese truck (metric) :p

the big hook is awesome for recovery, If I could find a 2, I would install it on mine (not actually actively looking). the other eylet that was stock on Yotas (passenger side I belive) is NOT a recommended recovery point.

also agree, yanking or tugging on these is not recommended, as it WILL teak the fram where they bolt in. Only direct pulling.

yes, correct, the passenger side is the side the originally "hook" is located ( had to dig through some pics to recollect). Been awhile since I needed/looked at them. Both sides have that tie down eyelet, which is what I was hoping no one uses for a recovery point (they tend to split and shear if jerked on too hard).

or you could buy brand new 88-98 style halfton chevy hooks. very cheap and you can make them hook where ever you want. or get two "assholes" at your local hardware or logging outfit stores and mount two shackles to that square chunk of frame the existing ones were mounted to. or you could weld a t inch receiver and use a hitch to get pulled out. or buy the toyota ones like everyone else says....haha. just saying if you got resources you have tons of possibillities

for freedom of mount, get the 2500 hooks, the 1500 hooks (from the front of the truck) mount slightly differently. they are threaded, whereas the 2500 hooks, have a threaded backing plate. we are talking "single" shear vs. "double" shear. I will have to locate the pics, but I have side by sides, and pics of my mounting of the 2500 hooks to my rear frame for recovery (as I do not have a bumper back there).

If you mount either on the front frame, here are the issues I noticed:

1500 hooks need there threads drilled out, and then one mounting hole on the frame needs to be relocated (single shear).

2500 hooks will need/should have the frame "sleeved" for added strength (allows mounting in Double shear), or you can bolt it to the bottom (single shear), which also requires a hole to be relocated/drilled. :naughty:

got the pics online: http://www.dirtyworldoffroad.com/gallery/Misc/

DSCN1022 is Passenger side hook, with tie down also visible
DSCN1023 is Drivers side tie down, definitely do not want to recover with this

DSN1020 are the 2500 (bottom) and 1500 (top) Chevy hooks
DSN1021 is same hooks, just a profile of their "thickness"

rest are pics from my mod, where I added a hole to the frame, and used the backing plates to mount the 2500 hooks to my Frame. DSC1016 is a good shot of the 2500 baking plate. (and yes, i notched the roll pan, intended fro straigh pulls only).

I have not done it yet, and I do not wheel as much as I used to, but I plan to add a retainer strap with a clevis pin, to keep the rope, strap or shackle (whichever is used) from sliding off. Have not gotten that far in the mod. (whish is how I lost my last recover rope and shackles :headbang:).

(note, that is not rust btw, that is good ol Azusa mud)

this site is not letting me display pics directly, or maybe it's my gallery settings, either way, too late tonight to bother.
