Toyota Dashcam comes with an 8 GB SD card. I like to upgrade the capacity. Is it documented what the max supported capacity for Toyota Dashcam is?

I am going through the Toyota Dashcam manual, and it specifies this link to download an SD card format utility:

Adding some space to the url, since the forum tends to render it:

Here usa manual page screenshot:

I think the SD card utility has been removed from the link.

Can I format my SD card with Windows 10? What file system do I need to choose?

What file system did you choose?
My guess is that the Toyota Dashcam works with FAT32 file system that is not available through Windows 10 as shown below:

An option explained here. I am going to give it a try and provide an update in this forum:

With windows10 you will need to download the fat32 format from an outside source, or alternately through windows powershell (much slower process, which I’m working on right now and should take about an hour).
Will test out the fat32 format tomorrow and will report back to let you know if it works or not.

Yes it's the same model.
I gave up on the 128GB card and found myself a 32GB SD card that can easily format to the FAT32 setup. Inserted the card to the dashcam and it seems to work fine, then after 10 minutes or so the alert sound keeps beeping until I press the "action" button. Not sure if that means the setup is done or not, as once I reinserted the SD card to the CPU the DRINF and MOVE folders were generated.

Will try inserting the cards to the camera to try one more time...

Providing update after a few month:

I was able to format and use a 64 gb sd card. I posted a picture of my sd card in one of the above posts.

After a month I noticed the dashcam sporadically shows red light status means something wrong. When I turn off and start the car again, the dashcam showed green light, but I would get red status sporadically.

My guess is that the dashcam cannot handle large capacity SD cards (see my sd card image in regards to speed)

I need a dashcam setup that I can rely on.

As such, I am using the original 8 GB sd card came with the dashcam again.

Has anyone experienced any issue after using 64 gb + sd cards?

Discovered something about the integrated dash-cam micro sd card.
I replaced the 8gb card with a 32gb card in my 2023 Highlander. All I got was flashing lights and beeps a few seconds after starting the car.

I discovered that there are several levels of SD cards, and since the dash-cam is high resolution, a normal Micro SD card is not compatible. You need a type 10 or higher micro sd card. This has to do with the writing speed of the dash-cam and the SD card's ability to keep up, normal SD cards won't work. But surprisingly, the good Micro SD cards are still about the same price as regular ones.

Class MB Per Sec. Use

Class 2 (C2)2 Standard definition recording and playback
Class 4 (C4)4 720p/1080p video
Class 6 (C6)6 Video Class 6 (V6)720p/1080p, some 4K video
Class 10 (C10)10UHS Class 1 (U1)Video Class 10 (V10)720p/1080p/4K video
The chart above comes from TechSpot.com.

Get a class 10 micro SD card. *I didn't try Class 6 but the price difference is negligable, so why get the slower class?

Worked for me. Make sure the car and unit are off, follow the process from Toyota.

Stumbled across this thread while looking for a way to format a new 64GB Samsung Pro Endurance micro SD card for our new Toyota Integrated dash cam. After several different attempts on my iMac I found that erasing and setting the Format to MS-DOS (FAT) with a "Master Boot Record" scheme worked. Screenshot below.

FWIW, I'm really disappointed with Toyota's Integrated Dash Cam. The image quality is very poor compared to most any aftermarket dash cam. I thought I'd try a different SD card, but the results were the same. Sample video and details here:

Hope this helps anyone that follows.

Mine is a more interesting case. I figured out that the 8GB capacity that comes with Toyota Dashcam can only support about 2.5 hours of video, so I tried to replace it with a higher capacity card (128GB).
Formatted it with Windows 10 (Which only supports NTFS or exFAT) so I choose exFAT. Apparently, exFAT is not supported by the dashcam so it keeps on beeping and error out.

I had a NIKON DSLR and plugged-in the SD adaptor and formatted the 128GB card to which is formatted it to FAT32 and which limited the size to 64GB (which FAT32 limit is). I copied the existing 8GB SD card contents to the new SD card and guess what, it worked.

I created more MOVE folders and more MP4 files. Had a long trip about 12 hours in total and all videos were saved.

I felt that it was a waste of storage space since 64GB is only used by the dashcam as it only supports FAT32, and I have a 64GB micro SD card on my android phone, I switch both cards.
Formatted my phone SD card to FAT32 (using the DSLR Camera) and inserted it to the dashcam.
Formatted my dashcam SD card to exFAT (which is supported by android) and inserted it to my phone.

Now after a few usage on the car, I experienced the same thing people had posted on this thread. The dashcam after few use, keeps on beeping, showing error. I had to stop and put back the original 8GB for now.

Not sure why it did not support the 64GB microSD card that I used in my phone.
It probably is about the write speed as people have mentioned in this thread.

I plan to put back the 128GB card as it work well for long trips. Even though it is a waste of space, somehow that 128GB formatted as FAT32 which limited it to 64GB worked.

The limitations are annoying when other dash cams are fine with 256GB or more. FAT 32 is solid but ancient technology. I wish I would’ve known this before I bought Toyota’s Integrated Dash Cam.

Ours came with a 16GB micro SD card. The 64GB card I mentioned above is working fine though. As long as the dash cam is set up to manage the file and partition sizes I’m not sure why it wouldn’t continue to work, but we’ll see.

I have a 128GB card in the VIOFO dash cam in our Tacoma. No problems with it either.

Very disappointed with Toyota’s Integrated Dash Cam, especially for the price.

Hi there I'm trying to format a max endurance 32gb sd card for my toyota dash camera on my 2023 Rav 4 prime. I try to follow the steps via the manual but once i click on the link ---> w ww.e-iserv.jp/top/driverecorder/DashCamViewer/viewer/contents/090002-38720700.pdf?da=20170904
there is no option for me to format the sd card. Any solutions for me to be able to do it at home on my MacBook.

I formatted a SanDisk 32GB Max Endurance microSDHC card with Windows 10 (format FAT32) - installed it in the Integrated dash cam and it works great. No problems at all - just FYI
Hi - just following-up to check if your 32 GB SDHC card has been working fine? Thanks. I want to buy the same for my Toyota Dashcam (PT949-34222).

Update: I installed the exact same memory card (SanDisk 32 GB microSDHC card and formatted as FAT32) in the Toyota dash cam of my 23 Sequoia and it works great.

I realize this an older thread, but for the benefit of those searching for info on maximum capacity ..

The current firmware supports up to 128 GB microSD card. You do not need to use a computer with special software to format the card. The dashcam will format the card. There is a bit of chicken and egg problem as the camera will start flashing its warning lights if you power it up with an unformatted card, and you need to get beyond that to connect to dashcam app to do the format.

I am successfully using this one from Amazon (about $13)
