Are you guys serious? I have my 05' Pre-Runner and have "Zero" problems! Make sure the molding around the bottom part of the window isn't loose or coming off. I had to have Toyota replace mine under warranty cause the winds taking my ski's to the river ripped part of it off!

Just a note (and not to steal the thread)
The lamintation is there to add strength to the windshield as it is and structural part of the body, that is why it is urethaned in. Secondly the strength of the laminated glass must also hold up to airbag deployment. Some vehicles have a accoustic windshield option, which has a thicked layer of vinyl between the two layers of glass, I have installed these in different vehicles and didn't notice much if any road noise differance.

As for rock chips, if you go to your local glass shop they can fix them before they run, we do them all the time due to all the rock (not sand) they put on the roads in winter up here.

I think for the most part if you have chips, it's from impacts with something not friendly to glass. I have noticed that some vehicles are more resistant to stone chips than others -I've heard the impact and not get a chip, but that probably has most to do with the angle of the windshield, and even the length/angle of hood. As for the cracks- that could be a problem from installation at the plant, and we've seen a number of posts regarding w/s being replaced for cracks. But I think it's a long stretch to say that the stone chips are the fault of bad glass.

The stock windshields are cheap & weak. Got a crack already running on mine from the bottom driver's side about 7" up. The crack was the result of a rock hitting the glass at approx 40mph. Wasn't even on the highway, it occured on a service road. I've been driving for over 15 years and that's the first time I ever had a windshield crack somewhere other than the highway. I'm replacing it next week with aftermarket one, $191.00 installed. Hopefully the aftermarket one is a little more durable and quiet...we'll see.

Got the same crack on my windsheild, but havent got a quote for a replacement yet. Is $191 an average price?
I called Safelite and they told me $240 same day service at my office and I told the chick giving me the quote that I was just price shopping. She said that she could knock off $50 if I scheduled an appointment to bring it in at their local shop, so I took it. I wonder how much a new one from the dealer costs...probably $300+. Anyone paid for one to be replaced at the dealer???

I just got a new windshield (2nd on the truck at 23,000 miles). I used to drive on a highway with a lot of 18-wheelers, so no windshield would have gone without cracks. I went to Safelite (Elite in CO) for my new one-- just under $300 installed. However there are some imperfections in the new glass that I didn't notice in the factory glass (objects will "optically stretch" when viewed through portions of the glass).

 I'm on my 2nd (Safelite)... so far so good. All the trucks on 83 were killing me.

most insurance companies have windshields worked into your policy. Every time I've needed one replaced, which has been many, I call it into insurance and only have to pay the deductible. Not my policy deductible, but the glass deductible. I've always paid a flat $100 and Allstate works out the rest. You can save a lot of money knowing what things your insurance company will help you with. Another example is towing. Allstate will pay me $50.00 back for any towing expense incurred. Sorry for the OT, just trying to help you guys save some dough!

No doubt it pays to know what your policy covers.
(Some states require ins. co to cover with little or no deductible -ours isn't one of them. Our reg comp. deductible applies -although the ded is waived if you can have it repaired instead of replaced.)
As for towing- if you check your billing, you're probably paying $8 -$10 for that coverage. Unless you have your (new) truck towed at least once every 5yrs, they're cashing in on you.

1 windshield and 2 paint chips in the first 1000 miles. Not sure if it's just a coincidence, but haven't had a single paint or windshield chip since I installed the stone deflector at 1K.

"bulletproof" no kidding!!! my truck should be safe enough to drive the pope and the president around now!!!!! :whatwhat:

probably not though...it looks exactly like the factory...so its probably shitty too!!!!! lol

I hope you guys who used Safelite did not get "SCG" brand generic glass. It's trash because it distorts your vision. When I had Safelite replace my windshield I made them use Toyota glass. And it was still $100 deductible whether I used cheap generic glass or more expeinsive genuine Toyota glass

Hey there,

my windshield cracked when i put my heater on it. dammit.. sitting there warming my truck up. hear a pop.. think whats that. then i see the crack run along and finish into the seam again... thankfully its only about 6-10" long along the bottom of the windshield.

still tho.. Toytota would not touch it. even tho it was not a rock/chip inpack. it was a flaw bubble something like that.

cheers
