I remember reading about the once, I thought you had to switch them both out..I did both at the same time.

Yep, replace all stock speakers and deck. No real reason to do just one. If you take the time to do one then just do the rest. Nowadays no matter your budget there are decks and speakers that blow away stock equipment and for the most part easy to install.

 

Except for the fact that replacing the component speakers require a little bit more work to make them actually fit. I'm well aware about replacing the deck and whatnot, but that is not the issue at hand. I have an aftermarket head unit, I'm just trying to get these tweeters to work.

Not sure what you mean by more work to fit? It was pretty easy for me.
Either way your original question, I tried to find the article I found awhile ago talking about the wiring ....still can't find it.

 

what about leaving the stock deck but replacing all the speakers? I'm not sure what needs to be done since the wiring sounds strange... I've installed stereos before, but never components.

Honestly I think I'm just going to splice the positives and negatives together for the components and tweeters since that seems like exactly what is done through the harness. The only problem? I can't figure out which wire is which for the tweeters.

So after successfully getting this done, I want this to go on the records so nobody has the same issues I did.

With the 6-speaker non-jbl setup, snip the wires at the harness to the current tweeters, crimp the positives and negatives together, run through a crossover and then to the tweeter. It's that simple!

cd, I am trying to put in front components and am stuck at tweeter install myself. I am installing Infinity reference 6030cs for the fronts. Replacing the stock tweeters with comp tweeters in the dash. So I should cut the wire harness leading to the stock tweeters in the dash, combine the 2 positives together and the 2 negatives together and route them to the crossover (which will be mounted under the tweeters in the dash-seems to be enough room). Then out of the crossover, wire direct to the tweeters with new speaker wire and wire direct to the woofers in the door with new speaker wire? If so, the factory wires to the door speakers should just be discarded? Thanks for your insight!

 

Okay, so the wires directly into the tweeter harness should be snipped, the positive and negative wires that lead into the harness should be crimped together and run through a crossover. From the crossover, a single positive and single negative wire should be run to the tweeter and voila! You're done!

There should be no disregarding of wires or anything like that, you use them for the final result.

The factory wire harness in the door will be the same wire I use to hook up to the new woofer component? The only new speaker wire is the wire from the crossover to the tweeter? There is no wire from the crossover to the woofer? Thanks again for your help!

 

Correct, correct, and correct assuming you're using in-line crossovers.

That is not in-line, it's actually much better for this setup. Unfortunately I don't have much experience with crossovers like that so I'm not going to throw you off.

What I would do is take what I've shared with you regarding the hardwiring of the system and look on google for how to use a crossover like that and apply them together.

cd, thanks again for your help. I isolated the HU wires that go to the crossover IN and all is working. Problem I have now is the Crutchfield 6.5 speaker adapter for the doors I got today just does not quite fit my car. So have to abandon the speakers for yet another day. Thanks again.

 

The easiest way I've heard to fix that, though I haven't actually done, is just hollow out the speakers that are currently there and use them as adapters.

I have read those threads as well. I wanted to keep the stock speakers to put back in when I get another car. I found the adapters online elsewhere and waiting for the shipment. I don't think I will be able to find the rear speaker adapters though and may have to make my own mdf adapters for those. I amde them for the tweeters so I know I can make them for the rears. After all 6 speakers get in, I will have to decide if amp is next on my list.
