Turning Key to Start Equals Blackout

EDIT: THIS HAS BEEN SOLVED!

Oh what did I do now...

I replaced the rear speakers in my '91 Previa and besides the right-rear channel *still* not working (I think it's the stock OEM stereo, not the wire) everything was fine.

That is, until I proceeded to install the new stereo, front speakers, and replace the instrument cluster lights. See, I'm trying to gradually restore & improve this Previa back to a respectable car. i've already done a fair amount of work on it - tires, repainted hubs, new lift gate shocks, etc.

So, I took out the stock stereo, bought a harness from Metra, wired it properly, and before placing said new stereo in, I also took out the instrument cluster and replaced the larger, part number 194-style bulbs, all five or six of them.

I then pieced everything back together. I was pretty psyched; I had just pulled off the biggest amount of work on the van so far. I reconnected the battery, put the key in the ignition, turned it first to the Accessory On position - got headlights, tail lights, dash lights (which look so much better now) and did not test the stereo, as the removable faceplate was upstairs.

Upon turning the key to Start, the whole van went dark. Great. I even took out the new stereo and reconnected the old stereo, same thing.

Yesterday I took everything back apart, examined all the wires I may have touched and I've found nothing. By the time I got everything back together again last night, i reconnected the battery and the dome light & "door ajar" light just barely came on.

So I've obviously drained the Duralast battery I got a year and a half ago from Autozone.

Some of my inner details here - I disconnected the positive terminal on the battery & not the negative. Second, on the instrument cluster, some of the bulbs were "upside down" where the "Toyota" imprint on the back of the socket was upside down so I put them right-side up. This being DC current and not AC, that shouldn't matter, especially when there are only two contact points. I also checked all fuses last night, nothing. All are good.

The stereo I bought is a Kenwood KDC-MP438U with the Metra CK-WHTY2 harness. While I read the wiring schematics for both the harness & the stereo, both matched up color for color as well. I'm no pro at car stereos, but I figured this was a good thing.

So going on all that, and a very long winded explanation, anyone have an idea what the heck I could have done wrong? Tonight I'm going to completely unplug the stereo, stick in a friend's same-size, etc. battery and try starting it. If that fails then I'm going to disconnect the instrument cluster and try again. If that fails, I think it's repair shop time because what I did, while a lot of work (maybe a miniscule amount of work from a pro's perspective)... wasn't that invasive. It's not like I attempted to add in a moon roof and got the wiring wrong. Most of the things I did involved screws, unplugging and plugging back in, that's it.

Solved!

Turns out it was the battery. By pure coincidence the battery had just called it quits. In starting the van before I replaced all these parts the battery never gave any sign of dying on me.

With the help of a friend & his truck, we stopped by Sears, picked up a Die Hard Gold battery, and I'm good to go. Guess I did all that wiring right anyway! HA!
