This is a tutorial I put together showing how i fixed the limp sun visor issue in my mothers 02 Highlander for less that $1. I wanted to help those of you that are frustrated with Toyota's failure to recall and fix this common problem.
I hope it helps. Cheers

Edit:
Ive been super busy I haven't worked on web stuff for a couple years so it took me a bit to get familiar with my server again. But I now have the direct download link. Also a big thank you to TrailDust for taking the time to upload and host on his server

Ok, I had to search that one. LOL!

So as long as the glue is holding up, I think it would be fine. I was looking to do minimal damage, as some glues will have some reaction with vinyl, and maybe the headliner.

I wonder how luggage makers get velcro to stay put besides sewing? I think a heat activated glue or something that makes a perm bond. Hmmmm

Well, I pulled the headliner down enough to slide my hand in there, and put the magnet on the TOP surface, gluing it there. Hard drive voice coil magnets are super strong, and VERY thin, and don't really care what's between them and another voice coil magnet (keep the web between your thumb and forefinger out of the way of them), so they are up to the task, and easy to put where you need them to be.

Not that it matters, although it may to some, I used the magnets that I got out of a couple junk 500GB Western Digital hard drives.

I used 2-part epoxy, and smeared it on both sides of the magnet, and mashed it into the spot that it wanted to pull towards with the visor in the up position. Once it was happy where it was, I spread the rest of the epoxy over the magnet, and let it flow to encapsulate it completely. Half an hour later, in the hot sun, the epoxy was rock hard.

Looking at it, from the driver's seat, with the visor pivoted down, you can't tell that anything was done; but the visor *does* stay folded up when it's flipped up.

Wow!

I come from a Honda Accord/Toyota Tundra forum and these mods are very...what's the word I'm looking for...SHAMEFUL!

There is no way I'd butcher my car or any parts like this. Come on guys, surely you can do better!
It's not the car it's the sun visor. They are easily replaceable with just a couple of screws. I didn't waste my time fixing the old one, I replaced it. 2004+ Highlander visors didn't have the problem and there are other Toyotas models that the visors are a direct fit such as the 2004-2012 Toyota Avalon (and far superior also)

I probably should of added this info to this thread anyway so here are some pictures

I just put 2004 LTD HL sunvisors on my 2002. Physically, they are a perfect fit and use the same bulb for the vanity lights, but the connector is different and they don't have homelink - 04-07 moved it to the overhead console, but I have it wired to my auto dim mirror.

I was sick of all of these visors having different connectors, so for the first time I chopped the factory harness and just put in a universal 2-pin , then I can just swap to any visor without having to solder on the car.

Like the 01-03 visors, these are vinyl and they also have a larger sliding door that is wider and slightly longer. It does the job better than the original one, but it's still not as nice as the 05-12 Avalon / 02-06 Camry ones

04-07 on left, 01-03 on the right (process was the same for both sides)

The 04-07 has a sliding door for the light and 01-03 has a flip up door which I find superior and miss a little, although I hardly use the vanity mirror anyway. The 04-07 ones don't blind you as much if you have an LED in there though. However, most importantly - these have a much stronger spring than 01-03 and I have never seen one fail at the junkyard. My driver side had been dead for long while, my passenger side was going, and I could never find a good 01-03 LTD replacement so I just caved in and went 04-07 when I finally found them in ivory. These are a perfect match colour-wise! I was also not a fan of the RX300 ones I had before which also didn't have the same connector, and were floppy when fully-extended.

As a visor itself, the 04-07s are a little better. More stiff and better coverage. They may not be as nice as the 02-06 Camry or 05-12 Avalon, but I wanted something vinyl instead of cloth and these seem to be the only vinyl ones I could find. The HL is more of the work vehicle and it's easy to get those tan visors looking horrible, so vinyl was what I went with. Now I have working visors that feel and look brand new!

The ultimate setup is 05+ Avalon sun visors with 1995 - 1999 secondary sun visor behind it. Still need to look at how to fit those. If im successful i will update here.

The Avalon visors get dirty very easily and hard to clean, that is definitely a downfall. If you are doinf LEDs in thw Avalon one ide also recommend ading a resistor to help it dim properly. I have not had time to wire mine yet

My 1st gen RX350 has the same sunvisors as the Avy, they just have a different mount that is used on the more modern cars. Definitely hard to clean and I'm looking forward to seeing what you do for the LEDs, as mine don't dim properly on it!
