My dad Bought the car for me to drive for like a year and I had no chance of which one to buy between civic and Corolla

Image Reasons

- Almost all the corolla drivers out there are 50+ and I'm 19 which seems strange

-My friends ask me what car I drive, they think Corolla is for old people

-Every Corolla out there , are slow drivers

-People Think civic and mazda 3 are way better cars, and I think too

Engine Reasons

- Loud engine sound while accelerating

-Feels transmission shift gears

-Bad steering wheel feel

-Hard to get up to speed

-3k rpm driving on highway at 110km/h.
Now I'm planning on the getting the CIVIC

stop listening to other people!!!

did you know that the COROLLA has sold 32,000,000.00 units since the middle of last year?

go ahead and sell it since its a horrible car and might ruin your reputation

i drove these two cars on more test drives than i can count.
the civic is louder on acceleration.
the civic is louder at cruising speed.
the actual difference in acceleration to speed is not noticeable.
the corolla DOES NOT rev at 3000 rpms at 110 kph (which is 68 mph). its more like 2650 rpms. even at 113 kph it is still at 2800 rpm's.
AND i see boatloads of old folks driving the civic 4 door.

I am 23 and I have no problem with the corolla. I admit the pervious versions are a little bit too conservative but the new version is a whole different story. I am not saying the civic and the mazda 3 are worse than the corolla, but for the long run, corolla will be on top of the list. As a previous mazda owner (sold today) Mazda parts are more expensive than the corolla and mazda tends to always have minor problems, especially for the brake system (My protege 5 had to replace the brake caliper three times)

i guess depends on what you are looking for? Honda civic is a nice car if you go for the SI (if you like high reving driving style). If not SI, the civic is still using SOHC and lack of low end torque. Corolla is a better overall car for daily driving. I mean if you are looking for a performance sedan, corolla is not your type of car. Corolla is more a car for daily driving, good fuel economy. Last but not least...pricing of the corolla is cheaper than the other two as well.

PS: this is a toyota forum, so you will always get basis info. But as a previous mazda owner, I really like my corolla.

your first comment is a bit biased. im younger then you and i drive a corolla. (17btw). how are corolla's for old people?? thats what avalons, ls460's and camry's are for. what do you mean slow drivers exactly?? slow as in the car (cuz the last xrs wasnt slow). here's a fact: over the course of history the corolla has sold more units then the civic. cant. compare the mazda 3 for pretty simple reasons (hope i dont need to explain that)

I'm one of those 50+ guys you refer to. Your first sentence tells me the difference between you and me when I was 19. Mainly, my Dad would have never bought me a car. I had to work my butt off to get my first car and it was an 8yr old Monte Carlo. I pretty much loved it, or any car that I could have called mine. I hope over time your Dad's car grows on you.

The civic Si will look more sporty than a corolla. Unless its a Corolla S or XRS. Then I think its about even. But I think honda's blow. lol What are you planning on, building a track/race car out of one of these plat forms? And not to sound like a dick, but you probly dont even respect the car its self because you didnt buy it, daddy did. Im sure you will find somthing out the Civic you wont like either. But good luck on your search!

The Mazda 3 (or Mazda Tree as my boyfriend calls it) is the worst piece of crap I have ever rode in, in my life. And very close behind it would be the Civic (which my bf owns, an 08, and which I have actually driven and hated the dashboard, and the fact that you had to push in order to get it to speed.) I drove the corolla twice before making my choice. I didn't go anywhere near the mazda and I never will.
The corolla is not an old person's car. I'm 21 and I chose it for a reason, it's a sporty car and not everyone and there freakin' brother owns a version of it. Yea ok, you see a few "older" people driving them, but I don't see a 60+ person driving an S or XRS (and sorry if there is someone on here that does i'm just using it as an example).

Why don't you just be thankful that at 19 you own a car and not be worried about what kind of car it was. When I was your age (which wasn't long ago) I was driving my Accent, worst car you could possibly drive, no auto locks or windows, piece of crap for speed, constantly needing repairs but hey, at least it got me where i needed to be and I didn't buy it.
Be thankful for what your getting, not what you want, but what you NEED to get you to where you need to be, safely, and most of all that's reliable!!!

I'm 42 and own a 2009 Corolla S and have also owned a 2007 Civic Ex. Around here more old folks( ones older than me ) drive Civics where the few 09 Corollas that are in town are driven by people much younger than me. Older Corollas are mostly old folk cars but the 09 Corolla S or XRS is definitely not an old persons car.

#26 ·
Well I'm 26 and I drive a Corolla...an XRS to be exact and I'm quite happy with the way it looks and performs. Infact the new Corolla has turned the heads of more than a few of my friends. One of them hates Corollas and couldn't believe what a difference the 09 Corolla was over the previous models.

Personally I would have been overjoyed if my parents bought me any car at 19. I drove their car for a long time sharing it with the rest of the family instead ...then managed to save up enough to buy my XRS. I think at 19 I would have even been happy with the 09 CE model even if its not everything.

Couple of things to consider:

The Corolla is the most sold car in the world. Therefore you are going to capture a large percentage of older buyers no matter what...there are just so many Corollas out there.

Of the people I know (young and old) the only people who own Corollas are under 32 years of age. I think thats 4 people I know. Especially with the 09 models its gained a whole new respect from younger people who are all of the sudden considering the car.

Above all ....its a car, it has room for you and your friends, and its pretty decent looking to boot. Plus it probably won't give you too much trouble. If I were you and were still unhappy with it....wait a few years until the totally redesigned Civic comes out and the 2010 Mazda3 has had a chance to get settled in and the problems solved and then trade it in.

#27 ·
Peer pressure is the whole story in here....just clear your mind and be yourself. Your friends are telling you it is so cool to have a vtec engine that sounds different...but did they tell you the car is lack of low end torque and has to really step on the gas to get all the juice out of the engine. You are really lucky to have someone to buy you a car when you are 19....just stick with it.

When alot of old people driving corolla around, you know why is that? that's mean it is a good car. Older people tend to do a lot of research before they go ahead and purchase an item...when older marjority of people have it, you know that thing is good.

you're young. I understand how you feel about speed and the image, but I feel like both are nonissues. In the end you are your own man and you have to stop worrying so much about what others think.

1. you are young and fortunate enough to have your dad buy you a new car. Run what you brung, and dont play show and tell and compare/contrast with your friends rides. There will always be something newer.... plus the car doesnt make the man.

2. 3000 RPM is normal to me. I drive at it 99% of the time. Granted it wont have the low cruising RPM's of a 2.4L or 3.0L, it does have pickup above 3k and has great gas mileage even at 3k revolutions.

I understand about the lack of pickup from a dig, but the only time it would matter is when youre racing froma light which you should not be doing in a car that your parents bought for you... Keeping up with traffic is sort of a struggle but if you can remove any uneeded weight, it will really help .
(-400lbs gives the same power to weight as a 2.4L toyota).

the good/bad news is that the corolla will probably last and save you alot of money in the long run(gas and maintenance). That has "roadtrip" and "going out" written all over it to me.

#32 ·
i got a RAV4 for my first car...wasn't the cool car back then, but dude it lasted me 13 years (and i miss it). I'm sure your parents worked hard for you to have a car. If you don't like it, walk or get a bus pass. The new Civics aren't all that either. You'll just end up wanting an EVO or WRX after that.

#34 ·
I don't know about male, but for female the insurance is the same. The lady tried to tell me this was because they are "foreign" cars, but I don't believe that at all they are just both sporty and POPULAR cars.

And, you just need to realize that driving a corolla as your first car should be a pleasure, not a pain. I could have only dreamed of that as my first car.
If you want a sports car, buy a M3, or an Audi A4, not a civic or a corolla!
And I agree with whoever said that the civic takes a lot to get it going, i noticed that immediately on my test drive and that was one of the reasons why i didn't buy it! That and to me, it's an ugly car. :headbang:
Not sure what they were thinking when they redesigned it, but props to the corolla redesigners, it looks much better!

ok... corolla drivers are not all 50+. You are right it's not exactly known as a young person car, but most older people seem to pick something like the camry over the corolla just for the fact they want more room.

You can have a civic si and still be a shitty driver.

It's not about what your friends think. It's not about what the car looks like. It's about what the car feels like when you are driving it. Let's face it when you are using your car you won't see anything more than the interior anyways. Who cares if my friends don't like my corolla? I like my corolla, I am also the one that still has my car 3 and a half years after buying it, when most of my buddies replace their cars every year or so.

You aren't a very good driver if you can't get a new corolla up to speed, I have drivin one and they are pretty peppy, I have no issues getting my 20 year old 91 hp sr5 up to speed...

as for the engine noise... you are driving a corolla, not a lexus

3k rpm at higher speeds is normal for a 4 banger, close gear ratios.

and the end of the story is you are 19, your dad bought you a brand new car. Enjoy it! You have alot to learn about appreciating nice things like that regardless of what type of car it is. I was lucky to get help buying a 16 year old car!

#36 ·
Dude,

You are way ahead and don't even know it. You have a brand new Corolla, different than the rest of the crowd. With the $5000 - $6000 you will loose on depreciation if you trade in the car, use the money to customize the car and you will have something unique and better than your friends have. If you get the Civic in 2011 the new ones will be coming out and you will have an old car. If Honda brings the Civic out a year earlier like Toyota did with the Corolla, your screwed.

#37 ·
why don't you just drive the corolla first till you can afford to buy whatever car you want later? just be glad that your dad bought you a NEW car. not everyone is as fortunate as you ya know. you'll understand, once you buy a car on your own with your own money then you'll have more respect for it. of course every teenager wants a "cool" car and if you feel the civic is cooler than the corolla then go for it. just make sure you know what you're doing especially in such a horrible economy like today's every bit of money saved is crucial. if having a car that your friends must approve of, then you must need some new friends lol

i guess you can join the civic crew so you can drive more fast and wrecklessly like all the ones out there. i am not biased towards the corolla or civic or mazda3...but after all, this is posted in the corolla forum so of course everyone will say the corolla is superior. i didn't get either one of those car...i got a vibe but i did buy this car on my own so i had a choice of whatever i wanted or could afford. going from a semi luxury car to an economy car i'm still proud of it because i bought it with my hard earned money :) you'll understand the value of the $$$ when you get older and more mature. good luck to ya.

yeah the mazda3 and civic are "cool" cars to drive. but when it comes to quality, toyota is #1 out of the three. fuel economy, again 1st. reputation, again 1st.

i test drove all three, and personally liked the mazda3 the best, but knowing the three companies history/reputation, i went with toyota.

and does it really matter what others say about corollas? it's your car, not theirs. and secondly, wtf, are you 10? others opinions should NOT matter. and thirdly, civic and corolla is a toss up, you cant go wrong. my sister has a 09 mazda3, and its nice and all, but at the end of the day i would still pick a civic over the 3, and i would still take the corolla over the 3. i find it EVERYONE has a civic or mazda3 personally at least in st.catharines and the GTA.

I agree with you, there are a TON of civics in that area. I drove to Welland for school and all I ever saw was civics. At least the corolla makes you unique. Civic has always been what I would say a "sport" looking car, but now that toyota is making the corolla S and XRS more sporty looking I'd take it over a civic any day, and I did!

not to mention, the insurance is cheaper than the civic and mazda3. everyone is under the impression those are kick ass rides, when in fact they just look nice and appeal to bone head thieves. and the corolla is an old mans car. ef that. the corolla is a smart mans car.
