V6 engine power... lacking?

Hi, for all you double cab 4x4 V6 owners, do you ever feel that the engine lacks power? The 235 hp/tq or whatever the V6 has seems kinda low for a bigger 4x4 truck. If you're driving it empty, can it hold a 6-7% grade at 80 mph without hesitation? What's the most you can get out of these with a supercharger while keeping the tranny happy? I figure Toyota engineered these trucks with a broad power band and good gearing to make up for the lower overall horsepower. I'm not a Tacoma owner yet, but i've been thinking about getting one. Is it possible to lift these a little without running into suspension geometry issues?

Mine's stock, but I've yet to run into any situations where I felt I was undergunned with the V6. Granted, more power is always nice but this engine is happy to rev right up to 5k or where ever it shifts and keep pulling. The trans is the same 5-speed auto the previous V8 Tundra used, so it should be ok for most any power adder you could install. Lifts should be fine up to 3" or so I think, but I'll let someone who has lifted their rig speak to that.

why don't you just gun it on the HW and see if it's lacking power. And for most mid size trucks, the tacoma can easily squeeze the extra MPG most other mid trucks can't. Stock i can get 23mpg and that's cruising at 65-70mph. With my 3inch lift and stock tires i was getting 21mpg at 65-70mph.

That's cool. When my friend had his Tundra V6, I drove it a few times and it felt good. The throttle was pleasingly touchy. I just wanna be able to smoke some ricers from a red light. I know you can't have it all in one vehicle, but I want my truck to be like my hauler, sport car, off-roader, etc. all in one. :D

I went to the dealer earlier after I made this post. Didn't get to test drive a Tacoma, I guess they were lacking salesmen today, but I picked up a brochure and found a double cab 4x4 WITH a longbed. Don't see too many of those it seems like. It was the SR5 model though. The difference between the SR5 and the TRD is just in the accessories right? In other words... Can I make an SR5 a TRD if I get the add-ons myself? Or are there powertrain/suspension differences?

I didn't know you can get an electric locking rear diff. as an option on these trucks from the dealer. That is awesome! Toyota knows what people want.

I've had my truck since Aug. 2005 and the only thing I can say I really dislike is the cruise control. This really is the only thing I wish could be changed. If you have any sort of load other then just yourself and you come to an incline, the bastid wants to drop gears some times 2. Wish they could just flash cruise programming :)

Honestly this is the only thing I can complain about. Beauty trucks.

I wasnt stock for long but i have never run into a problem with lack of power.

As of now I am running DT longtube headers, TRD intake and exhaust, URD y-pipe and a URD MAF calibrator and i ran the 1/4 in 14.8. Keep in mind too that i am in a lifted dub cab 4x4 with 33's and heavy pro comp wheels.

The best power out of the TRD supercharger I have seen to the wheels is from a member on XRU. He put down roughly 350rwhp. He has the TRD blower and all the supporting mods.

The quickest 05+ double cab 4x4 is also a member on XRU. He has the same setup as above and his best 1/4 to date if im not mistaken is 13.32. Not too bad for a v6 mid size pickup.

Impressive numbers! I would be happy with 300 hp at the wheels. Those 1/4 mile times are pushing 370Z status...

I had an 06' Dbl cab. The cruise sucked ass. It wouldnt hold a gear to save its soul. I hated it. The brakes were pure mush and it had a tough time pulling my trailer through the mountains...The Tacoma just didnt have enough power and grunt to be my dedicated work truck.
I sold it after a year and bought a Hemi Dodge which could tow effortlessly and was quieter, smoother and had better brakes than the Tacoma. I put 50,000 miles on it and subseqeuntly sold the Hemi while it was still worth a 1/3 of its original sticker (Arrrgggh) and bought a Cummins powered Ram which I have been beyond pleased with in every respect. I will drive the Cummins to 250K without giving it a second though.

Fast foward to today. Wife was driving a new GTI that was worthless in the snow. I never forgot how well the Tacoma held its value how much I liked the way it looked and how great it was around town or on the hwy sans pulling a Trailer. So when the 0% financing deal hit I was on it like stink on poop. I traded our GTI in and went with an 09' Access cab. The brakes still suck but the cruise in the 09' actually works and works well....The truck feel like it runs stronger than my 06. It still eats gas like crazy. I dunno how these guys are getting 23 MPG. A full tank gets me 300 miles max in combined driving. If its just around town? Well since putting on a small lift and a set of 285's my truck does 260 miles from full to low fuel light in town. Thats 13-14 MPG. Thats with my little wife driving it and her foot isnt that heavy. My 06' was about as bad.

My 09' while a good running fun truck that sprints to 60 pretty good just dosent have the power or torque of a V-8. It may be faster in short sprint but its a tinny revved out fast. Its not a set the cruise and quietly pull you over the hill fast...Its a noisy raspy affair compared to any of the domestic V-Ohoes.

Dont get me wrong I dig the truck but I didnt buy another one for the power.....I bought it for the resale, the solid build quality, the tuneability with aftermarket parts and overall style. I will never buy a gas powered Domestic half ton again. Talk about losing yer' ass at trading time...My ass still hurts from my Hemi deal.

These trucks just flat out look sexy as fvck, ride smooth and quiet and hold resale like nothing else I have ever owned.

My wife claims this is her favourite vehicle ever and makes a fuss whenever I take the keys!!! Biatch!
Excellent post Chazmanian! Thanks for sharing your experiences. I've got a Dodge Cummins right now. I love it. I'm sure you know though, the Tacoma is much more daily driver friendly. You've got a SWEET looking Tacoma there. After researching other trucks, I feel like no other truck in the same class can compete with the Tacoma. They engineered them well.

13.3 is very fast for a mid size truck. A stock mustang gt will not get down to a 13.3 thats what stock evo's and sti's run. I got a 96 impala ss that runs 14.0 its ok for a big ass heavy car but that 13.3 tacoma would kill me.

Ps i also have a 73 nova with a 440 small block that runs 10.60s not bad for a street car.

lol.. I like your style! But a supercharged 350 hp, 13.3 sec Tacoma is hard to beat. Heck, even 14's with a few mods is impressive from a 4x4 truck! I've got a similar type of "Banks Kit" on my Dodge right now. I'm guessing it's putting out 240hp/600lb-ft of torque at the wheels.

The Dodge is a beast around town. Its big, its noisy, its fvckin' industrial!! My employees have it out on the road most of the time....

If it aint raining this is my daily driver now:

I want to add the TRD SC to this truck real bad....Its hard to justify it when my wife drives it 80% of the time and has started acting funny when I take it away from her if it rains or I need to haul my dirtbike to the trailhead....Biatches love trucks too!
Nice bike! lol.. Gotta love women who dig trucks. Makes it easier to explain when it comes time to buy upgrades. :D

the only time i felt like the Tacoma needed more power was when I was pulling my 3000 lb Travel Trailer to Yosemite going up Hwy 120 (7000 ft elevation increase). Other than that, this truck got plenty of power.

I live on a mountain when I'm not in school and I've never had a complaint about the power. It's reasonable. This isn't a sports car, and it's not a full-size pickup, and you can't expect it to be, but the power is suitable to the truck. It has enough to tow, haul, and has enough accelleration to merge easily and get up to speed. It isn't more than you need, but it's not less than you need either.

And I would love to supercharge mine.

Hey Guys,

i am not sure i care if my taco can do 14sec 1/4 mile... i put lockers in mine to go wheelin..

when you have 4 wheels turning ... the V6 is a little weak.. i have stalled out foot to the floor.. too much tracktion and not enough power to push through.. the engine just kept loosing RPM untill i had to get off gas and push clutch in... thankfully i was able to back out no problems..

99% of the time there is plenty of power ....

my is bone stock in the engine dept.. no exhaust/intake natta !!!!!

cheers
