ok i have a 93 3vze 4wd ext cab. when i took it to get the oil changed at 88k miles the guy at sts said my timing belt was worn out and should replace it. im at 90k miles now and it seems like the timing is weird. when i drive the truck around town. i push the pedal about halfway to accelerate. first and second gear seem to shift early, but when it tries to go to 3rd it wont shift until i get it to 60mph. idk if thats normal but it annoys me when i just hear the truck revving very high just to shift into 3rd. its an automatic.

Yea I didn't notice the 2000 mile difference there when I wrote it. College student, thursday nite, shots, apparently it impairs reading ability. They're right, that is kinda wierd to happen all of a sudden but if the cable broke it would obviously cause problems but I think it wouldn't shift at all if it was broken. I'd check the fluid level first off if you haven't all ready. Mybe the thermostat,as strange as it sounds. The truck won't shift into O/D until it reaches a certain temperature. If the thermostat was sticking wide open it would take longer for the truck to warm up and would therefore hang up when shifting into the higher gears. Kind of an obscure thought but that's what Jagermeister is good for! :D

In other words, no repair was made since that oil change, and the problem that you are having with the transmission had just started recently?

It still could be the throttle valve cable, but your description doesn't seem to fit the usual symptoms, and the TV cable don't go out of adjustment by itself. A broken cable is possible, that is where the picture would help, especially the driver's side of the engine when the intake duct enters into the engine.

N.E.O.

nope just oil at 88k. i dont think it ever got a timing belt replaced. it was barely used when we first got it, we got it like 5 years ago. i think it had very low miles on it maybe a little more than 50 or 60k. i dont have any pics of the engine. ill try to find my moms camera and snap some pics of the engine. i have service receipts from ages ago. ill look at them again but im pretty sure there was no timing belt replacement

You could be right they may have screwed up the timing. Another idea (yes it's a long shot and I have no clue why they would have touched it) but check to see if the detent cable (mite be wrong word, goin on a what a sketchy mechanic called it) has been adjusted. On top of the engine you'll see the throttle cable but with an automatic there's a second cable right next to it. I've been shown before that that is the what controls the shift points on the transmission. When my tranny got swapped out a year ago it wasn't shifting into O/D so I took it back to the guy and he adjusted that a bit. Again with a timing belt I don't have a clue why the hell anyone would touch that but that's why I said it's a long shot. Hopefully someone on here is smarter than me, they usually are. Good luck.
