my 2004 camry 4 cylinder has been making tick tick sound and i wanted to bring it to the dealers to have a valve adjustment. It has 43k miles in it. How much will it cost? Like estimation or should i follow the manual to do it myself?

The 2AZ-FE engine uses a "shimless" valve lifter design, meaning it cannot be adjusted. However, the valve to lifter clearance CAN be adjusted by swapping out a lifter that is the correct size. According to the service manual, the lifter is available in 35 different sizes.

edit: www.camrymanuals.com, the 2AZ-FE file, it talks about this. (page12)

The shims do wear, as do the Cam lobes. It is good Preventative maintenance to check/adjust clearance at the least every 60-70k.

Per Toyota Maintenance intreval, Check you maintenance guide that came with your car, it should state the valve clearance check/adjustment in there.

Dont worry about light valve ticking, i have owned seven 4 cylinder cars and trucks and every single one has made this sound. It never affected the longevity of the engines in any way. As long as the valve clearance is within specs, it wont hurt anything. In fact, the valve to worry about is one you DONT hear as maybe it is too tight. I know the sound is a little unnerving to some but if you realize it is normal you will stop hearing it.

I think i'd let it tick, if the sound got too loud i might pull the cam cover and check the clearance myself. To do all the work shown in the post above, you might as well pull the head and do a valve job while you are at it if you are doing all that, thats what i would do.

Besides which, some mechanics dont know how to measure valve clearance, one time i took another car to a shop to have the valves adjusted, and when i got it back from them it wasnt running right. So i checked the clearances myself and EVERY SINGLE valve was adjusted too tight, some had NO clearance at all and would have burned in a few hundred miles. That is the last time i ever let somebody else adjust my valves.

Dont worry about the ticking, if it bothers you too much, check the valve clearance yourself. And if any are out of spec, then decide what to do. (Probably dont need to do anything to the valves and the car will run like a champ for 200,000 miles.)
