Does anyone know if this would be possible? I have a friend with an '06 Avalon with 20" wheels on it, and he asked me about putting bigger brakes on it.

that....makes no sense. bigger wheels wont wear out your brakes any faster than smaller wheels unless your buddy has been much more aggressive braking.

bigger brakes isnt solution. you need more durable pads. get ceramic pads. about oem performance but lasts longer.

this is exactly right, I doubt venza, highlander and the models that offer 19 - 20" on premium models have different brakes when
looking at base model VS limited or platinum trims.
I have a hard time believing a +1" or +2" sidewall variation would cause even the slightest difference in brake pad wear. I would check rockauto.com for some Akebono premium ceramic pads, or do the "lifetime warranty" deal at a local big box corner parts store and just keep changing them.

I would maybe suggest looking for a vehicle specific big brake upgrade not a "swap" those 2 cars dont really share anything.

if looking for a discernable difference I'd do the pads I mentioned above, slap on 2 sets of drilled rotors (again, see rockauto.com ), take the calipers apart and clean and lube the caliper pins with specific grease, do a brake fluid flush or pump a boatload of fresh fluid through the system. I'd bet this simple service with improved rotors and pads would be more than adequate on a 06 Avalon. the Avalon is the flagship toyota sedan, I doubt it would take much to get it stopping good !!!
the premium drilled are the way to go without getting the roughness that slotted will produce. see below.

It would still be safe. I did a brake conversion on my S-10 consisting of C4 Corvette calipers and rotors on the front, and Camaro rotors with '84 Eldorado calipers on the rear. It was very safe. I also did a swap on an old 626 I had where I swapped out the front brakes with Mazda 6 calipers and rotors. No problems there either.

I agree with you on this. I autocross and have been known to drive pretty aggressive sometimes. But he came up to me and said that he wanted bigger brakes, so I'm looking into seeing if it can be done. I would like to talk him into this instead, but he has his mind made up, so I'm gonna make it happen.

youd need a lot more weight than going to 20s to wear out brakes faster. like....300 to 500 lbs more. the higher unsprung weight wouldnt wear brakes out.

as suggested you may as well go full aftermarket if you are getting new venza brakes. cost difference is negligible

I think a user here changed his front brake setup for highlander parts. Tried searching but couldn't find the thread. I'm sure the Venza her ia doable but at the same time why? If you're wanting a bbk might as well look for a company that makes better components then stock. Also, I've been riding on 20" wheels for about 4 years now. When I did my brakes I upgraded the fronts to drilled and slotted rotors and ceramic pads all the way around. No issues with premature wearing of components for me.

Yes Venza calipers will fit the Avalon, they are .1" smaller rotors than the highlander but if your an EBC brake guy the good thing the venza calipers offers is that you can get car pad compounds where as the highlander brakes only get truck compounds. You need a 17" wheel, i just test fit mine yesterday and everything lined up, just awaiting stainless braided lines.

Just hope he doesn't drive so hard that the manages to overheat those drilled & slotted rotors badly, what I've read says they sometimes like to develop cracks. As for me, all new ceramic Akebono pads + all new stock Centric rotors. Smooth stops with just a touch of the pedal, and lots of grab when I need it.
