Armed with all the knowledge I've pulled from this site, I took the plunge and did the 5100 install. It went well, so keep reading.

I rented a spring compressor from Autozone, but it didn't look beefy enough for me, so I went down the street to Advanced Auto Parts and rented theirs too. Instead of having one compressor on each side of the coil, we had one at each quadrant. There was pretty much no way that the spring could pop out and take someone's head off.

It made a much bigger difference than I expected!! Shocks are set at 1.75".

Installation:

The hardest part is compressing the springs. Aside from that it was pretty easy. We found that if we unbolted a lot of stuff, it was way easier to get the coil assemblies in and out of the truck.

We unbolted the LCA's, the sway arm, and the steering knuckle. The steering linkage was the most important thing. Other threads I've seen didn't mention taking this off, but I couldn't imagine doing this job with it on.

Notes:

The truck definitely rides better. It soaks up bumps much better. There was a rattle somewhere in the dash before these shocks went on, but now it's gone!! The truck rides less harsh now.

It tracks perfectly straight. There are no weird vibrations.

Tire rub is gone. They were hitting pretty good before, but now all is well. Tires are 265/70-17 Nitto Terra Grapplers.

I'll probably take it in for an alignment, but I'm not sure it's even necessary.

Here's the other stuff we did this weekend:

That's it for now. Next weekend the Kenwood DNX5120 goes in.

The rear leaf spring TSB will be done shortly (provided I can talk the dealer into it) and then a Toytec 1.5" block in the rear to get my rake back.

I hope this thread is helpful.

It was $229 at Tractor Supply. It's 37" long x 20" deep x 17.50" high. It locks and it has two nice handles on the side that make it nice and easy to take it out when I have to.

Looks good!!! Just did the same thing to mine last week!! Let me know if you have any questions, i just yesterday installed the DNX5120 w/steering wheel controls retained SWI-JACK, Kenwood IPOD Cable, and rear BOYO backup Camera.
I'll be doing the same exact thing but without the back-up cam. Did you use the Scosche or Metra kit?

Didn't know you guys have Tim Horton's down there in NY! Nice garage too.
You couldn't swing a dead cat around here without hitting a Timmy Ho's.

The garage is my step dad's. Sure beats the hell out of doing this stuff outside when it's 18° out!!!

Definetly get an alignment, cause your camber is wayyyy off and will junk your nice tires in no time.

Good job

The camber isn't actually as bad as it looks. The picture is distorted because I used a mega wide angle lens (Canon 17-40 f4L on a 5D, for you photography buffs).

maybe it just looks this way but does the spring look upside down to anyone else? the coil looks wound to a tighter dimension at the top of the shock than it does at the bottom and I think it should be the other way around I just checked my truck and on the stock springs which is what it looks like you were using
the last coil at the bottom has an outisde diameter of aprox 99mm
the last coil on the top has an outside diameter of aprox 108mm
Sure looks to me like its in there backwards also the top coil has a flat surface and the bottom one looks like its round all the way around

Huh, all I can say is that I put it back together the same way it came apart. What would happen if the springs were backwards?

If you look at the spring, it has a flat edge on one end. That is supposed to contact the top plate.

You may get away with it, but taking that chance is not worth it. Check both your shocks where the spring rest on the bottom plate, should be round spring meeting the stop.

Like this:

If they are not like this, your spring is upside down.

Its tough to tell in the photo where you are compressing the spring on the stock c/o but that top coil DOES look pretty round to me...hahah maybe toyota had the spring in upside down the whole time. on your other photo its clear which coil is not round
Also in the 5100 photo the spring does not look centered on the shock especially in the middle of the spring it looks much closer to the bottom of the shock body than it does to the top, under compression the spring might rub the body of the shock and or slip around a little on the spring seat. I know it sux but I would get them flipped around.

Nice install! How long did it take to install the suspension? Have you done it before or was it your first time?
Thanks!! This is the first time I've ever done anything like this, and it took about 4 1/2 hours.

I just checked my springs. The flat edge is against the top plate and the round end butts up against the stop on the bottom plate just like it should. The picture has a few optical illusions in it.

There's a shop across the street from my office that will do an aligment for me real cheap. I'm going to take it over there this morning.

Looks great! I especially like the tool box with wingnuts so that you can remove it if necessary. That's brilliant!

It looks like you have a 2009. I hope the seat covers won't affect your airbags.

So I tried to get this thing aligned yesterday at Pep Boys and Firestone.

The guys at Pep Boys made Karl from Slingblade look like a genius, so I got out of there as fast as I could.

The guy at Firestone said that because the truck is lifted, it won't match the factory data that is in their computer, so they couldn't do it.

Where are you guys getting your trucks aligned after installing 5100's?

How much lift 1.75" ? I had my truck realigned after i did my 2.25" spacer lift and for $50 all they did was adjust one tie rod end and make my steering wheel crooked.. didn't touch caster or camber ps I also do not have any bad wear on tires at all. I'll likely get another REAL alignment when I do my 885/5100 setup

Just wanna thank all:

Yeah, this was an alarming situation for me. Another member brought this to my attention over on TW... I immediately corrected issue. I cant believe I got away with that. Guess that just goes to show that the C-clip works very well, and will work perfectly when installed correctly LMAO...

I'm just glad you're still alive brutha man. I guess that c-clip has some tenacious grip!!

That looks great Rico!!! I just hate the idea of losing so much bed space for what amounts to a tool box to hold a meager number of emergency tools and tow cables...

I am thinking I may look into rigging a metal tool box to the side rail...

hmmm decisions decisions...

shit this post makes me want to spend money! hehe wait I did yesterday. I got some nice OEM heated tow mirrors on the way .
