Is it all the time while driving or just over bumps/in corners?

 

Yeah like in bumps is a clunk clunk, man is a like having a nonstop nose bleed!! Im fed uo with it!! But i love my camry!! LOL

 

Could be bad struts, not just the bushings. Or maybe in the sides of the trunk, under the carpet you have something banging around. My car has the jack and tire iron in there. Maybe there's something hidden under the spare tire.

 

After you have checked all the things in the trunk that have been mentioned, check the rear lateral controls rods. They are the 2 rods on each side that run outward (laterally) from the centerline of the car toward each rear wheel. The bushing in the rear-most one on each side has a tendancy to go and sometimes cause a clunk. Jack up the wheel on that side and grab hold of the tire at 9:00 and 3:00 o'clock. Try to move the tire side to side and inward and outward. Do you hear the clunk. If you do, chances are you can stick your head under there and observe the bushing in the rear rod moving and making the clunking sound. If so, the only fix is to replace that rod and do an alignment. I believe it's a dealer only part and it runs around $160. The bushing is not available by itself, at least from the dealer.

I would re-check the swaybar. I had similiar clunk sound and was able to recreate the sound by shaking my swaybar, It was hitting the gas tank. I changed out the bushings and now all is fine. But if you are sure it is not that then I have no idea.

I mean im going by what the mechanic is telling me, and he said theres nothing wrong with it, imma probably take it to another mechanic 2 get a different opinion or somenthing. But tommorrow when i get a chance im going to shake the sway bar and see if there is something loose down there.

 

ive had this sound since i put in my lowering springs. I always assumed it was the endlinks. ill have to try shaking the rsb and the control rods...

 

I have a 94 Camry with a similar sound. I've been told it was likely the sway bar bushings that are kinda square and separate the bar from the frame. The bushings come in 15mm 16mm and 17mm sizes depending on the bar. One needs to measure the bar with a wrench or whatever to see the size. Mine was 15mm.

They are about $10 at NAPA and NAPA also carries the bushings for the end of the bar. I have no idea if the sound is from the bushings but sooner or later I'll find out.


I'm going to change them sooner or later but at the moment am fixing the brakes.

Sounds like it....but mine is more of a hollow thump... as if there was something coming from the spare tire bucket...happens on a pothole..

 

I got my sway bar bushings replaced and mine still make the noise, so I just live with it

 

I had a hollow thumping sound from the rear of my camry, and I did two things, so I can't honestly say which one fixed the problem. But here's what I did:

1) Replaced rear end links (found a set on ebay for $30 shipped, 1 year warranty, took 10 minutes to replace).
2) Removed sway bar bushings, wrapped sway bar where bushings sit with a lot of teflon tape, then sprayed the inside of the bushing with lithium grease, then reinstalled. The teflon tape made the bushing fit tighter around the sway bar.

My old end links did not look bad, nor were the joints loose, so I think that my biggest fix for the problem was the sway bar bushing tape/grease. I did all this after I took it to a mechanic who said that nothing was wrong with the rear of my car and said that it's 15 years old, it'll make noise... Well, after doing the two things above, it made the noise go away.

 

The sway bar bushings can still clunk even if you yank on it and it doesn't move.

 

Majority of the problem is from rear sway bar bushings. If problem didn't help then it might be your front shock mounts are getting old.

 

Hmmm, I put in new bushings (somebody had put in bushings for 17mm bar on a 15mm bar, they were a bit loose!). I just sanded the bar some and greased the inside of the bushing. I might try the teflon tape trick.

Lie on your back and look. You don't even need to jack the car up. I changed mine just they way the car sat in the driveway.

 

um...check your muffler... mine bounces a bit and makes a clunk noise when i hit bumps, specially after i drug bottom on a steep set of tracks... think easy first then go on to difficult my friend...grab it and shake it like it stole your lunch money.

 

Welp, I"m new to the forums, and was researching the loud annoying clunk I had going on in my 95 camry rear end, thought i was going to need new struts, when I ran across this thread and a few others including the DIY instructions, which are excellent, I figured I would try this $16 fix, I got some polyurethane rear sway bar bushings installed in like 5 minutes a piece and IT WORKED!!, ironically when i got that quieted down, I heard a slight clunk in the front end. I wanted to say thanks for the help and ask, is this a common problem in the front end as well, and if its not these bushings is there anyway for me to figure out if its the Strut mount myself, or do I have to take it to a mechanic to have it checked? Thanks All

Hey, just had to say "Thank you!" to you all who've given your input for this topic. I had the same annoying clunking sound in a '95 4cyl LE and followed the leading advice and put on some new sway bar (A.Z. list them as "stabilizer bar" bushings in the Seattle area) bushings and that extremely irritating noise is gone. Thanks again guys.

 

I am buying my sway bar bushings today, it is OOS and will try this fix, but in the meantime, I will try the teflon route....might work, since it is so easy to do.

 

Yehey! I finally solved my clunking sound! Itw as indeed the sway bar bushing. I did not wait for my parts, as suggested, I tore it down and saw how the bushing was worn out and how the bar was also very shiny on the spots on contact!

So, I wrapped electrical tape on it and then a lot of teflon tape. Sprayed lithium grease and put them back. Did my test drive and the clunk is gone. When it comes back, I will replace my sway bar bushings!
