What is this third wire on the distributor pigtail connector wiring harness

Unplugged distributor. This is a picture of the wiring harness going to the distributor pigtail connector.

You can see the two copper wires where I spliced them together and you can also see where I pointed to an unspliced aluminum wire.

What is the purpose of the aluminum wire, is it to add strength to the wiring harness or is it supposed to be attached

I'm not sure which butt connectors you plan on using but I highly recommend that you do NOT use these

And get some of these heat shrink connectors, then use a lighter or preferably a heat gun to shrink it and achieve best water resistance to keep your connections from corroding.

Far as the shielding goes, it doesn't get terminated anywhere on the connector side. It is just simply wrapped around the signal wires.
