What Made You Choose Your Camry Over...Say...an Avalon?

...or perhaps another large sedan?

Personally, I absolutely fell in love with the SE model's body kit (as with the previous-generation car) but I'm a bit dissapointed with the actual size of this vehicle; Toyota calls it a mid-sizer, which it is by technical standards I suppose, but it's just not all that "big" to me.

Coming from a sports coupe, I was looking for a big sedan this time around -- I considered the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger; the 300 just didn't do it for me up close (too much of a "pimp" mobile and they're just everywhere here, everyone rollin' on like 24s and bigger) and the Charger my fiance hated -- said it just "wasn't our image"...I think the top of the line Charger is pretty hot. But anyway, there were cars like the Avalon...but I don't know...it just didn't fit our ages...I always said I would buy the Avalon if Toyota offered a sport model with a body kit (of course this wasn't going to happen because of the demographic target of this car) but then the price always stopped me, too. It really does look like a poor man's LS400, but I couldn't justify the price of a Limited Avalon...

What about you Camry owners...is the size of your ride to your liking? Would you have gotten something larger if you could do it all again? Today, we were driving my fiance's father around and he sat in the front seat of my 08 SE, and he just looked "cramped" even with the seat as far back as it could go; he made a few comments about how to get real space today in a car, you actually need a small truck...I began to question the room and utility of my midsized Camry...:sosad:

I'm only 20. All my friends say my car is HUGE.

they have:
mini cooper S
2006 s2000
mercedes SLK

and so on... lol. They call my car the bus. The size of it and the fact that it is actually a bus for kids lol.

yawppppp. the car is pretty damn big but if u make it like peach's car, then u'll stand out n be different.

they call me monster truck cause im not lowered and the car is huge. also cause PEACH had to call dibs on lammydi's trd springs.

I personally think the Camry is a HUGE car for the mid-size class. Try driving the 2007 Ford Fusion, Mazda 6, Hyundai Sonata, etc., then compare it to the Camry. The Camry has way more room, not to mention way more power.

The Avalon is in a different class. The suspension is way too soft compared to the Camry SE, not to mention that the Camry is a big enough car for me. My parents have an 06 Avalon (newest style) and it is frickin huge! It is too difficult to park.

Overall the Camry offered the best looks, best performance, and best value for the money.

man if only i had more money and less bills to pay. i left my car at home for a couple days and parents used it. stock height and they managed to scrap, chipping off paint on the front lip. looks pretty bad now.

ANYWAY, if ur cramped in the front with the seat all the way back, ur pretty tall. im asian.. 5'10" and 170 pounds and i have all the room in the world. when im sitting in any passenger seat, i can cross my legs and sit comforably.

I would not have bought an Avalon because Camry I already think my Camry is way too big. I already wish I would have bought something smaller like a Corolla or Civic because then I wouldn't be getting only 30 MPG.

Judging by LTD, were expecting something like a Crown Vic? The 300C is almost 1 ft longer than 07 Camry and only a few inches shorter than Sienna. Maybe Avalon would have been a better choice for your requirements if not for the price.

As far as room goes, the size is fine since I never have anyone over 6 ft in the car. I'm only 5'8" and the back is still pretty roomy. As far as utility...what exactly do you need? I've fit 2 bikes in the trunk, or one in the back seat and one in the trunk before. Just depends how many wheels I feel like removing. I put a blanket in the backseat to protect against grease though. Heck, I just moved a tree in combination with a Costco run Saturday afternoon.

#8 ·
Yeah I'm not too sure about the Camry being small. I'm 5'8" 130 pounds and I just look awkward when I drive this thing, like I'm drowning in it. If I had a choice on the car I was getting it would probably have been a Corolla; plenty of room for my needs, and better gas mileage too.

I drove the Chrysler 300 because my wife liked the look of it. But I couldn't see out good enough, it looked cheap inside, and it was more expensive then the Camry if you got the V8. And the 6 was just not enough power for that car. This was back when gas was $2 and change so I'm glad I didn't go for the V8.

The Avalon is too big and too ugly... granny mobile. My hair is not blue yet.

I bought a Camry LE V6 in '07 and loved it, so when it came time to replace my wifes '02 Tundra (because of gas prices) we got her an '09 Camry LE V6 like mine. It's just the right size for us, plenty of power but still good on gas, and we like they way they look.

I didn't look at much else, I'll never buy another BMW that's for sure... what a hunk of crap. I would get laughed at if I bought a Ford or Chevy.. don't like the looks of any of them anyway. Nissan's are kinda ugly to me also. However, the Altima 2 door I would buy.. it looks cool. Can't stand clear tail lights on the 4 door, they look like bad aftermarket bolt ons for kids. The rear of the Maxima looks bad too, looks like they just ran out of ideas.

I test drove the fully loaded 300 c and found out that it is just tiny bit larger on inside despite being much larger on outside. I have an infant seat in the middle of the back seats and I can fit 2 adults in the back with no issues. The car is plenty wide and has enough leg room. Your fiance's dad must be quite a large fella.

ClinicaTerra LTD,

It seems to me from your story that you actually didn't start questioning the size of your Camry until your soon to be father in law started making comments. Personally I would have told him to shut the fuck up and try walking, then he would have plenty of leg room. Its your car. Don't let other people's opinion deter you from what you like. If it fits you, that's all that matters.

agreed!! LOL

I'm 6'2 195lbs and I think the camry is roomy enough for me, my brother is 6'5 and he never complaint about my Camry being too small. I thought about the Avalon but it roll like a boat and exterior is fugly....

Camry looks better than the Avalon, and if I wanted to spend the money for an Avalon, I would rather get a V6 XLE Camry fully loaded. I also think the Camry is nicely sized, plenty of room inside, everyone I've driven has been pleased with their seating experience.

#15 ·
Thanks for your thoughts, Omer; the Camry doesn't feel "small" to you from the driver position perspective? Why do you think the Avalon looks better than the Cam? Just curious; the Avalon does look like the Lexus LS from certain angles, specifically the rear, but its target audience was not really a group I was ready to enter. Was just curious if folks who bought the Cam thought the Avalon may have been "better" after they made the purchase because it is a bigger vehicle.

I've seen a few Avalon's with tinted windows, aftermarket wheels, smoked lights, debadged, etc. They look HOT!! I would chose one of those any day, for me I prefer a sporty look on the outside, but a more luxurious look/feel on the inside.

Geoff,

Then why did you choose the Camry if you thought the Avalons were so hot? I'm assuming that's your Barcelona Red Cam in your sig, right?

Oh, well, TouringCam, I WISH I could afford a Lexus LS -- I simply can't, unfortunately...

Now THAT'S a large luxury car! Love the LS and its tailpipes!:eek::eek:

I think my Camry is fairly large as it is. I am kind of thinking I should have gone with a Corolla actually. I've driven the newest gen Avalon extensively and yes, it's big. It's very comfortable but a little impractical if you will always be parking in small lots. I would definitely consider it if I needed a bigger car.

I honestly don't give a flying F*** what people think I look like or what image I give off when I'm driving my Camry or an Avalon. I joke that my car is for "old people" but you know what? I love it. And that's all that matters.

I definitely do. Even when there are five people in the car. I guess it's all a matter of what we're accustomed to. My friend has a '99 Corolla and my aunt has an '01 Sentra. My legs actually got numb/sore during a 20 minute drive in the Sentra because there wasn't enough leg room. So all in all, the Camry is perfect for me. I can drive for hours at a time with no fatigue.

I like the new Corolla a lot and while the backseat is obviously smaller, it's usually just me or me and another person. Not like I'd be sitting in the backseat of my own car anyway ;). My passengers are free to walk to their destination if they don't like my car. Ha ha!

EDIT: Come to think of it, everyone who gets in my car comments on how comfortable and roomy it is.

Agreed; yeah, I like the new Corolla a lot, too...that body kit they slapped on there gets me every time...I always confuse the new Corolla coming from the front for a Camry SE; and I don't usually make mistakes like that! ;)

The only thing I don't like about the Corolla S is that I feel like it's all show and no go. The "S" is simply an appearance package, not anything different performance-wise like the XRS.

As much as I say I will probably get a Corolla next, I have a feeling it will be a Camry.. I'm thinking either another LE or an SE I4. I noticed my local Toyota dealer clearing out some '08 Camrys. I saw a new V6 LE in the papers for $20.3K and an SE I4 for $21.3K. Seems like great prices for both IMO.

Yeah, I guess I can understand where you're coming from on the Corolla S; but you gotta admit that skirt kit looks pretty cool...

Okay okay.. Ha ha. Yes, I admit, the 'ground effects' on the S/XRS are definitely nice. I've seen a couple Corolla S models around in dark gray. Very sharp.

Camry for life though :)

Comparing to Avalon, there is the price factor. My Aurion with all available options was much cheaper than the Avalon with similar options. They both have the same engine (here at least), and the Avalon is a lot heavier thus less 'pick up' :). The Avalon looks more like what the senior age group would drive (IMO) and i'm not that senior yet!!!! (just hit 30)

Comparing to other brands, there is the Toyota durability and value factor. My older car was a 2000 Maxima GV (Asian spec). I bought it new and had it until 2007. The best car I ever owned. Unfortunately, they haven't changed the Maxima here in the Gulf until now (2000 to 2007 same model) I would have bought another Maxima but it would have been the same car!!!

This is the First Toyota i have ever owned and i'm very happy. I guess its going to be 'Toyota for life' for me

I agree a model should never run longer then the payments on a first year car. For most folks that's 5 years. I like to replace my car every time I get it paid off BEFORE anything needs to be replaced. Most of the time I only have to buy tires once. Plus it's just fun to have a new car every 5 years. But it's no fun at all if it's the same car. So... yeah.. if you want repeat buyers you better have a new one for sale every 5 years.

I liked the styling of the camry both inside and out, the gas mileage, with gas going over $4.00 a gallon
,I bought the I4 etc. I am happy with the interior room and trunk room. To me the Avalon is the" best Buick
toyota has ever built." Quoted from Motor Trend Magazine.

ClinicaTerra LTD,

So maybe my last post wasn't so helpful. Maybe this will help you:

The 2009 Camry SE Specs:

External:
Length: 189.2 in
Width: 71.7 in
Height: 57.7 in
Turning Base: 36.1 ft

Internal:
front headroom: 38.8 in
rear headroom: 37.8 in
front hip room: 54.6 in
rear hip room: 53.9 in
front leg room: 41.7 in
rear leg room: 38.3 in
front shoulder room: 57.8 in
rear shoulder room: 56.9 in
interior volume: 101.4 ft3

Compared to the 2009 Avalon XLS:

External:
Length: 197.6 in
Width: 72.8 in
Height: 58.5 in
Turning Base: 36.9 ft

Internal:
front headroom: 38.9 in
rear headroom: 37.5 in
front hip room: 55.8 in
rear hip room: 56.2 in
front leg room: 41.3 in
rear leg room: 40.9 in
front shoulder room: 59.4 in
rear shoulder room: 58.2 in
interior volume: 106.9 ft3

The Difference is:

front headroom: 0.1 inch
rear headroom: -0.3 inches (SE won)
front hip room: 1.2 inches
front leg room: -0.4 inches (SE Won)
rear leg room: 2.6 inches
front shoulder room: 1.6 inches
rear shoulder room: 1.3 inches
interior volume: 5.5 ft3

The biggest gain was found in rear leg room. Your father in law wasn't sitting in the back, he was sitting in the front where the SE is bigger in leg room. It wouldn't have made a difference if you had the Avalon or not, his fat ass would still looked cramped. The gains for internal volume found in the Avalon VS the Camry is nominal. An inch here, an inch there. It doesn't really matter. Your Camry is still a nice sized car. Thanks and Goodnight.

-Matt

Yeah, Matt, but for appearance purposes, let's look at the Camry's 189 inch length and the Avalon's what...198 inch length? And the Chrysler 300 is even bigger than that...doesn't this make the Camry's appearance a bit..."overshadowed" on the road? :ugh3:

ClinicaTerra LTD,

Trade in your Camry for an International Lonestar and call it a day, Then you won't have to worry about anything swamping the size of your automobile (especially if you opt for the trailer):

Image

Seriously, though, I thought your original concerns for your Camry were for the interior feeling too cramped. Now it has moved to the exterior. All that amounts to is extra plastic. I think you are just trying to find things wrong with your car. Try to be happy with what you have. Hell, like you said, you paid 30K for it.

Here's another story to maybe ease your mind about your Camry's size. The other week A couple of friends of mine flew into ORF for a school and I agreed to pick them up and take them to base. My wife came with me. I drove. She sat in the Passenger seat. 3 grown mean over at least 5' 9" 180-200 lbs sat in the back. One with a laptop case, one with a (full) seabag in between his legs. The trunk was packed with 2 full sized stuff to the brim duffel bags, 2 full seabags, 2 backpacks, and another laptop case. And don't forget their subway sandwiches. Does that make your Camry seem bigger now? I'm just trying to help you like your car more, I guess. Well, I like it... even if you don't ;)

To tell you the truth i really wanted an altima. My choices were between accord , camry or altima. I had 15k to spend and was getting bored looking at cars. the altimas and accords were average $2000 higher than a camry and i wanted a V6 and was not really willing to compromise on that part. There were more V6 camrys around than V6 of the other two and the first V6 Cam i found that was in good condition, i snatched it up.
Im very happy with my 2002 V6. But my next car will probably be an Accord.
