Tis true. It was the predecessor before the 7m. That model engine also came supercharged 1ggze. I'm still looking for that one.

Its a popular swap in aussie land because it was 2.0 liters and was ligher than the 7m with about the same HP (appr 215HP).

They're only 2.0 and same hp? and lighter? thats pretty sweet. How much power will they make? strong aftermarket?

 

Yeah that engine actually was an option for the supra GA70 to be exact. There isn't a lot of aftermarket support because that engine was only available for a few years.

From what I remember the engine was too weak to boost excessively, but that could be because of the lack of knowledge about the engine. The twin turbo is tiiiiiiny. Even smaller than the ct9.

The 1G-GTE was used primarily overseas as an even less displacement powerplant in the Mk3 chassis. It was aenmic and even when fully built with a large turbo the most I've heard of them making was 400, and that was balls to the wall built/etc. I personally find them to be worthless.

The 1G wasn't a previous to the 7M, it was at the same time. As for the GZE, stealing now from Answers.com:

The 1G-GZE was a supercharged version produced from 1986 till 1992. Output was 168hp at 6000 rpm and 167 ft·lb at 3600 rpm. It was a 4-valve DOHC engine but featured a distributorless ignition system (DIS). 1G-GZE was mated only with automatic gearboxes. In August 1990 it was replaced with 1JZ-GE on Mark II/Chaser/Cresta, while serving on Crown till 1992.

the 1g would be GREAT in a smaller, lighter car such as an AE86 corolla! definatly not an mk3.
