What to look for in a Gen 3 Camry

I found a 95 Camry Coupe V6

I'm very interested in the car

I'm checking the car out with my dad this weekend

Now, my dad has the gen 2 Camry V6 and he maintained it himself, so he know quite a lot about the gen 2. However not so with the gen 3. What mechnical should we look at?

The bad: The car has done about 250, 000km but the owner said he has only changed the timing belt once. He also mentioned that the tranmission used up a bit of fluid every half a year. Other misc problem is the power lock door on driver side doesn't work all the time. The trunk lock can't be open from outside/inside (forgot which one).

The good: The car was mainly dealer maintained, all the parts changed are toyota parts, and the car has no rust.

I'm weary about the timing belt not being done yet for the second time as well as the transmission. Any suggestion to what I should be looking out for?

look for valve cover leaks as the rear is prone to leak as the car gets older, but it's a fairly easy fix if you can do it yourself

as for the tranny, a leak could be a problem, or could be not. more importantly is to take a look at the fluid and make sure that it's not burnt and make sure that it had regular tranny fluid changes

the timing belt is not a problem at 250, though they used to recommend changing every 100k

the locks can usually be easily fixed as well by taking the doors apart- same with the trunk release

Jump all over it man that is a very, very rare car that you have found. As long as it has proof of regular maintnence, then you should be fine. Like Eye8 said, check the transmission fluid. Also check the head gaskets to see if they are leaking oil. If they are, it's no huge deal. If you buy it, make sure you bring it in and get an oil/filter change, new air filter, spark plugs changed, new timing belt, coolant/tranny fluid flush, etc. Just make sure you keep could care of the Camry and it will take good care of you.

Awesome cars, and the one you're lookin' at is exceptionally rare.

Lol no huge deal if the head gasket is leaking? Its prity expensive...depends on how much your getting it for really if it has something like that wrong with it.

Also tranny issue is alittle concern, but on the bright side if its using fluid up it must be getting new fluid more frequently then usual, and if its not slipping or anything with new fluid it must be in ok condition (Although obviously make sure its been changed at proper intervals).

yay for v6 camry coupes. i'm lucky to have one of these little gems.

what you should also check is the steering rack. i had to get mine replaced at 120k miles since it was leaking. it's usually not a very obvious thing that's noticable but do get it checked out for safety reasons since i've owned 2 95 camrys and both had to get the steering rack replaced.

How should I check the steering rack?

I'm not overly concerned with the power door locks and trunk lock etc. My dad is in auto part/service industry so a lot of time he comes across abandon cars. I told him about the car and he said not too worry since he already found me a parts car if I need any of those small stuff.

He is weary about the timing belt as well since he always changes his timing belt at 100k and does regular maintainence. However I've browse through the repair manual and it says to check timing belt at 60k miles and replace if necessary. At 15k miles afterward (replace the timing if it hasn't already been replaced at 60k). So he is just within the limit 75K Mile =~ 125k KM. Kinda risky IMO.

The seller is asking 3600CAD for the car. But I figure if I have to spend another 1000 on getting all the stuff changed. I think I can knock it down quite a bit. The reason why this car is so inticing to me is because it will be my first car and the insurance for me (young guy) is very cheap.

check the transmission pan gasket, that could be the source of the leak... I know mine just went last year, not a bad place to glance at if youre under the car.

What do you think of the price $3600? Should I bargain it adown a bit since it seems I gotta do so much now to get it in good shape for the winter. I'll probably buy a new set of all season tire.

As dysk said, may be just a pan gasket leak. Cheap fix. Eye8Pussies was dead on with all else. Since your dad know's the V6 Camry Engine (even though it is a diff one), he should look for the same stuff on the Gen 3 V6. Mechanically, there is nothing that is "normal" to be bad on a Gen 3.

For the timing belt, I just changed mine at 150,000km, and my mechanic said I did not even need to really do it until 160,000km. He has never seen one break on a Camry V6 before 160,000kn. :) Especially if it is a Toyota OEM Belt, since it was dealer maintained.

As for price, what features does it have? Sunroof, Leather, Power Seat(s) add a little more to the Value. But as well, the coupe is not common at all. But always bargain the price. Whats the worst the guy can say? No, $3600 FIRM. But hey, just try.

Good luck!

I just checked out the car today

The bad: (according to dad)
Rack'n Pinion is leaking oil, so it will need replacing
Driveshaft (near transmission) is leaking, so new seals would need to be put in
Timing belt, water pump will need replacing (since the owner hasn't done it yet)

The good:
Body is in great shape (no rust, major dent)
Engine and transmission feels very smooth
The exhaust is still original

The meh:
The trunk lid won't stay up
The hood hydrolic seems loose so it won't hold the hood up very well
Powerdoor luck on driver side is not function

So far so good, my dad already talked to his mechanics and just going to check out the part prices if it's all within reason I think I will be getting the car :D

mmm.
sounds like a good car to me.
my hood shocks are shot as well.
but a regular sized bat will do the trick.
i wish i would have looked a little harder when i was
lookin at camrys, instead im stuck with a bonestock 4banger sedan.
i still love it though:loove:. you will not regret.

If you don't buy it PM me!!!...I've never been to Canada! LOL....really tho If you don't get it you'll regret you passed it up!! I love mine!..I had to replace the head gaskets, had a rear caliper lock up on it, other than that its been perfect! It'll always get any repair is needs. I hope to keep this coupe forever! As mentioned before their rare!

yeah i got my 95 v6 coupe from the dealership i worked at for $3k with 90k miles and all dealer maintenence done, it just needed rear brakes and 2 rear tires and some cleaning up on the interior, but ive got over 110k on it now and haven't done a thing but change oil and im fixin to have to fix a valve cover gasket leak, but i still work at a dealership so i get a great deal on parts and ive got all the tools, equipment, and techs to help me and show me the little secrets to get it done faster! Its still an awesome car

I don't see so many here in the Mid Atlantic states, maybe one every three months, but yesterday I saw a cherry dark green SE coupe driven by a little old lady, appeared that she was shifting gears too!! I just about went running after her, but had second throughts!! She may have had a gun!! LOL
