Quick question... Whats the difference between reverse cut and standard ring and pinions?

How do i know if my truck has reverse cut ring and pinion gears (my truck is an 04)?

Is the Reverse cut gears only for the front differential or is it for both the front and rear differentials?

The reason i ask is my front differential is shot (pinion bearing seized up and sheered teeth off my ring and pinion) and im going to be replacing EVERYTHING in the front differentials all the way down to the spider gears and bearings (shrapnel went everywhere and im not taking a chance on reusing anything from it)... The problem is nobody makes a 4.30 ring and pinion set for my truck, so i have to go with different gear ratios and eventually regear the rear as well... probably 5.29s

reverse cut is usually for the front diff. that way the front and rear tires spin the same direction.

If you look, everyonce in a while a set of 4.30 will show up. what size tire are you running? 5.29 is a lot of gear, 4.56 is much better if you are running a 33" ish tire. A bit much for stock.

try looking at these guys. Dealt with them before, great company

Im currently running 35's, with a 5 speed W59 tranny and the 2.7L engine.

OMG!!! thank you soo much for this link man!!!! Iv looked high and low for someone who makes a ring and pinion set for my stock application and this is even better, they already have it put together so all i have to do is drop it in!! Awesomeness in my book!! Plus i already went to the dealership and they were gonna charge me $857.00 for JUST the ring and pinion gear and that's it and they wernt even sure they were gonna be able to get it because there computer was saying they only have 6 in the entire country and weren't sure if they would be able to have it shipped out hear. I couldn't believe it.

But in your opinion what gears do you think would suit my application? 4.56, 4.88 or 5.29. To be completely honest with you the way its set up now is just fine with me... its not a race car but it does get out of its own way if i need it to and does everything else fine.

Also does anyone know what type of front end i have, weather it is a reverse cut gear or not and if its truly a 7.5" diff or a 8"? The reason i ask is because it seem Toyota made a lot of different front ends for Tacomas. The year of my truck is a 2004 and from what i read that is the year that they started mixing with things.

The teeth on a gear have a drive side and a coast side. When going forward the gears are meshing on the stronger drive side. In reverse they use the weaker coast side.

The early (79-85) Toyota trucks have a solid front axle that use the same diff front and rear, so the front diff is is rotating backwards and using the weaker coast side of the teeth.

The older Land Cruisers have a high pinion front diff that has reverse cut gears, so when going forward the gears are meshing on the drive side, so the diff is stronger. Plus the high pinion housing has more ground clearance.

But you can't just swap in reverse cut gears.

Thanks for all the great answers to my questions!!!!! Much appreciated :thanks:.

I just have one more question to ask and it involves the axle seals in the front... While i have everything apart i figure i might as well replace all the seals for the CV axles. My question is what do they call that one seal on the spindle that the CV axle goes threw? I know that the there are two seals, one that actually mounts on the CV axle and one that is pressed in to the spindle. Should i replace those while im in there, or just leave them be?
