Why a PreRunner?

Don't taze me bros, just asking why the PreRunner is so popular among Taco owners. Why not go the 4 wheel drive route instead?

I am just asking a question, not starting anything with anyone.

Thanks!

My slant ... for those who want the agressive look of the PreRunner without the weight and extra cost of a 4WD.

Believe it or not there are Tacoma owners out here who don't have the need or use of a 4WD vehicle but still want a quality truck.

I know many guys who have purchased a 4WD and have never taken it off the blacktop, nevermind going four wheeling. Aside from the false status of driving a "man's truck" and spending all the more money for basicly the same vehicle.

Just my opinion.

You're absolutely RIGHT! I bought the 2003 DC 4x4 and actually used 4wd twice in snow. I had cool bragging right tho. When my 03 got stolen I bought 05 DC w/ out 4x4. Works fine for my daily commute. Buy 4x4 if you REALLY use it otherwise it's just a waste of $$$. Go for it if you have the cash. My 2 cents from experience.

Thanks for filling me in.

I suppose if you live where it never snows or you don't go off-roading it would be cool to have the look. Before I bought my truck I went to look at one that a dealers ad described as "Off-Road Ready". When I got there it was a PreRunner with the TRD Off Road stickers.

I live in the snowy Chicago area and I plan on using my truck for off-roading mostly during hunting season.

I got a PreRunner because for the amount of off roading I do, 4x4 is a luxery, not a neccesity. I have a locker. Besides, the right line, momentum and the proper amount of gas can get you through just about anything.

There are a lot of people who do crazy stuff with their PreRunners. Like this. Just check out the Desert Folder on TTORA

I take it that those of you who dont understand what a Prerunner is dont follow off-road racing.
Quite simply, in off-road racing such as Baja, a prerunner is a truck that they use to practice or, "pre run" the race course. Its very similar to the actual race truck, but its a 4x2 and the engine isnt quite as hopped-up as what the race truck has. This allows them to practice the course and tear up the truck without putting unneccesary wear and tear on the race truck.
The was the inspiration for the Tacoma Prerunner. Its a truck that is identical to the 4x4 in terms of frame and suspenion. The only difference is that it lacks the front running gear (transfer case, differential, driveshaft and CV joints) that a 4x4 has. Other than that, there is no different (from a mechanical standpoint) from a 4x4 to a Prerunner.
The Prerunner appeals to people who like the tall stance of a 4x4, but whom dont really need a 4x4. A Prerunner is, on average, about $5,000 less expensive to buy than a 4x4. Also, because it lacks the front running gear of a 4x4, in theory it should be more reliable than a 4x4 in the long run (fewer moving parts = better reliability).

My 2000 Taco, which I bought in Cali was a pre-runner...I wanted the 4x4 stance w/o the extra $$$ for the 4x4. Never took it off road.

Sold truck in California in 2005, moved to Colorado and bought my 06 4x4. Great in the snow and I have taken it and abused it off road. Funny difference between Cali and CO - can't find a Pre-runner on a lot in CO and couldn't find any 4x4's at the lot I looked at in Cali.

Anyway..as stated, the Pre-runner is 2 - wheel drive truck on the 4x4 platform.

Isn't that the truth? I would be hard pressed to find a prerunner on a dealer's lot ... I do like the prerunner alot... didn't toyota in the first gen tacoma do a special appearance package specifically or marketing its name? Color matched, wheels, etc? If I lived in warmer climate I would definately own a pre.

I live around good ol snowy Chicago and I have a prerunner and I love it. Yeah, it snows around here a lot but for the most part the roads get cleared pretty quickly. If it does get bad and I'm out, the weight in the back and some smart driving works well. The amount of times I would have really needed the 4x4 during the year just didnt justify the extra 5 grand. I also didnt want or like the short stance of the non-prerunners so it was a prerunner for me. But I did have to drive three hours to get it.

+1

As much as I love Taco's, I always thought the non-prerunner 2wd looked a bit silly. I had an '02 prerunner (totaled), and when it came time to do it again, I knew that I wanted a prerunner again. I don't off-road, so that wasn't an issue for me.

In case you're wondering, 4x4 wouldn't have made a difference in the wreck that totaled the '02.

I should have explained more thouroughly. Where I hunt is 2 hours west of Chicago in farm country. They don't plow like here in the city area and the roads drift pretty bad because it's so open. And, where we hunt we have to pull off of the roads so a 4x4 is pretty much a necessity. Also, I need to pull a boat every now and then and I have seen plenty of people get stuck on the slippery boat launch.

2wd or 4wd, whatever works for you and where you live, just so long as its a Toyota.

I bought the 4x4 because I service a lot of farms for work and the last thing I wanted to do was get some farmer all fired up then have to ask him to pull my stuck 2WD out the mud for me as well...that would not be good.

Then again, I guess I could have saved $$$, bought a PreRunner and with the extra $$$ bought a rockin' wench and a grip hoist....Problem Solved!

I've owned owned six trucks all being 4wd but the last, my 06 DC Prerunner. I go offroad but not in the mud or snow. Dosen't rain or snow much in so-cal. The higher stance and locker do the trick for me.
That sounds familiar, I have owned a bunch of different trucks over the years. But I bought this PR mostly because it tows my camping trailer great, the extra suspension is really for that, and the little off road stuff I do in the desert and mountains is easily done with the Limited Slip kicking in once in awhile. I looked at the 4Xs but couldn't justify paying the extra insurance on it when the PR would do what I needed. Like this truck a bunch, I am really impressed with it even on some steep sandy hills in the desert! If you like the 4X go for it, the PR is perfect for me.

$ and $. Quite simply, money. Cheaper to purchase. If someone would've donated the extra 3 grand it would've been 4wd. Cheaper to own and maintain (fuel economy and insurance premiums). Some of us are on a budget. It may be 2wd but it looks a whole lot better than the 5 lug non-prerunners. Just 'cus we're on a budget doesn't mean we want to drive something with our ass 3 inches off the floor. And with decent driving skills you can do some level ground off-roading (You'll never climb like a 4wd) but you can still enjoy the dunes and sand with the right driving skills, good suspension, and airing down.

if i ever win any lottery, id buy a pre-runner and set it up to race and go baja the crap out of it... and roll it  that would be a good adrenaline rush at least... but i know that wont happen :sosad:

Why a Prerunner? Because they don't offer the V6 in the non-lifted style.
I will never go offroading, so I have no need for the ride height and actually prefer the smoother lines of the non-Prerunner and the slightly lower ride. But, I wanted a V6, so.

Wrong.

Have you never heard of the Tacoma X-Runner? It's has the V6 engine but on the 5-lug suspension. Just go to Toyota's website and look at the Tacoma, you will see the X-Runner option and it costs less than a Pre-Runner V6. The X-Runner is only available in the Access Cab configuration w/ 6 speed manual though, so if you want a quad-cab or an automatic transmission you have to go with the Pre-Runner.
