Wind Noise - '17 Tacoma Access Cab

I did some researching on this forum, but didn’t find exactly what I am looking for, so bear with me if this is a repeat. I recently purchased a 2017 Toyota Tacoma Sport 4WD, access cab. Very shortly after the purchase (less than 1000 mi on the odometer), I started realizing a wind noise on the driver side, it sounds like the window is slightly cracked open and starts around 60 mph. It is really noticeable as you drive near a barrier (such as a jersey barrier along the highway) where the sound is reflected back. I first noticed a small gap in the vertical rubber molding on the door frame, where the vertical molding meets the rubber molding in the corner of the door frame. This gap was not present on the passenger side or on another Tacoma access cab I looked at. So I brought it to the dealership and had them replace the molding to remove the gap. In meantime I taped up every seam with painters tape: the seam that runs around the entire door where the door meets the frame, the seam where the window meets the rubber weather stripping on the door (the glass to rubber interface on the window itself) and then the seam around the entire access cab window (the window that does not open). I taped each seam system individually and drove the truck for some distance at 60 mph. In each case the noise did not change. Then after the dealership replaced the molding the noise also did not change. The only thing I can surmise is the door insulation is minimal at best or it is a design flaw that allows the aerodynamics to generate noise at higher speeds at the door/window seams. To say this is frustrating is an understatement after spending over $35k on a new truck. The dealership sales rep and the service rep have never heard of this issue but complaints are online. I do not chalk this up to - it is a truck so noise will be present, or refuse to hear - you have to just let it go. Certainly making me second guess my decision to go Toyota again (my previous 2002 Tacoma lasted 312,000 mi and I loved it). I have seen some complaints on the 2017 Highlander where wind noise is due to gaps in the chrome trim under the side mirror, but I don’t think that applies to the Tacoma. I had a friend drive the truck as I sat in the passenger seat and it didn’t appear to be as prevalent, but I haven’t spent much time in the passenger seat to really compare. I don’t want to just drop it at the dealer and hope for the best, so I will continue my investigation, but I am really running out of ideas. Disappointing and at a loss here, any thoughts on this are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forums! :)

Sorry to hear (no pun intended) of yer noise issue. Is the noise prevalent inside the cab? Does the noise dissapear if you slightly crack open any of the windows? Have you tried folding the mirror back (if possible) and see if the noise disappears? ;)

Yes, it is prevalent in the cab - almost sounds like the window is slightly open or the seal between the door and access cab is not tight. As the driver I hear it loud and clear; my passengers need to make an effort to hear it by leaning over. Once they lean over they can hear it (with radio and climate control turned off). It isn't a piercing or loud noise, more of an annoying noise indicating a "leaking" seal or "not tight" cabin. I am trying to convince myself it is normal road noise, but it clearly isn't. If I crack the window, it doesn't disappear; I actually sometimes crack the window so I can hear normal "window open" noise and don't have to get aggravated by the unintentional noise. I have not tried folding the mirror back, but I guess it's worth a try. Ugh.

PS, thanks for the forum welcome...I figure someone here has to have a similar experience...I hope.... :)

This happens in my Tacoma sometimes as well on the freeway but not every time. I usually just push my hand against the glass and it stops, or just roll it down a little. Personally, I do not think it is as big of an issue to take to the dealership because they "fix it" and "never hear of this issue" like you are s*** out of luck. (from experience with other issues)

Window wind noise 2017 Toyota Tacoma Sport 4x4

Well, I can sympathize with you Cheapo38. I have been racking through these forums looking for a thread that talked about the same thing i was experiencing. I am also new to the forum, usually don't submit comments however i thought this was important enough to sign up. I purchased a 2017 Toyota Tacoma Sport 4x4 which now has approx 800 miles on it, right out of the dealership driving down the highway 50 to 70 mph, i noticed a very high pitch whistling noise coming from the drivers side window. Only test drove in town roads never on highway at highway speeds, didnt think i needed to , i am a long time Toyota owner, have driven Toyota trucks for the past 20 years or so and never experienced this type of frustrating cabin noise. Long story short i also did a process of elimination to find the source using tape at different areas while test driving at interstate speeds. After 2 rolls of tape and 78 highway miles i found that when i taped up where the mirror bracket plate that attaches to the door frame meets the window, not sure what its called, kinda triangular in shape the high pitch wind noise subsided even in high cross winds. This puzzled me because i was hearing it towards the back of the drivers side window not in the front, however i know that sounds travel. i am figuring that air is coming through the door jam seal at that level of the truck and moving through that plate which is causing the high pitch whistle between the plate and the window. I have talked with the Service Manager at the dealership about the process i used with the conclusion, he said he was going to do some research and also speak with the Toyota Rep and get back with me on this. However did not seem to be real excited about resolving the issue. Will see! 9 working days at this post date, no return call yet. Absolutely incredibly annoying!

Here's a random thought... maybe there is an adjustment problem with the door latch, and there's enough play in it such that the door can move a tiny bit and it's not making a good seal. When you hear the noise, try applying both inward pressure (pull on the door handle a little bit) and outward pressure against the door to see if the noise changes.
