I have a 2022 Venza and an iPhone that is linked to the cars info system.

From my understandin, if the phone is not plugged into the jack, the CarPlay options will be limited and basically function for phone calls only.

In order to use most all of my apps, like music or driving directions, I would either need to be plugged in, or install a device like Carlinkit, is this correct?

Bluetooth gets you Phone Calls and Streaming Audio (Music, Podcasts,Toyota App, etc.) from the phone to the car's speakers.
If you want CarPlay(navigation etc.) you'll need to use a USB cable for that or as I mentioned there are dongles that give you Wireless connectivity for CarPlay but those are 3rd party items for about a C Note on Amazon.

Got it my friend, now I’m understanding, thank you :)

Motorola came out with an adapter recently for $90 on amazon. It's the only one that Android themselves have come out and supported so far.

Still deciding if it’s worthwhile to get a dongle since the advantage of having the phone plugged in is that is always being charged.

When driving, most all trips do not involve using any navigation but rather just any phone calls that I might receive but even they are rare, so I’m thinking a dongle might not be that beneficial for my driving habit?

The dongle is tiny. I just put my phone at the Qi wireless charging. No more plug in and no more wire. It's more clean and a bit more convenient.

Mine was more for convenience, no need to take the phone out of my pocket since it just connects right away. Navigation, Bluetooth for phone calls and music, all connect automatically. Pandora will even stop the song when I shut the engine off and get out, then play automatically from where I left off as soon as I turn it back on. Necessary? Not really, just makes it convenient. Amazon has a great return policy too if it doesn't work out for you.

What car model and year you talking about?

I'm on my second adapter, so far this one is working better than the first (cheaper) one... Also, I'm going to have Toyota fix my USB port under warranty, I lose connection at the slightest movement of the USB plug.

I have a 2022 toyota Venza XLE and I have been using the cable that came with my car to connect to CarPlay, but it has a short in it and will no longer stay connected. I tried other USB cords and they will not work, I went to the dealership amd they had no idea why the other brand cords will not connect to CarPlay either. I ended up buy the set from the dealership because I need my navigation and it cost $65. Does anyone know what is special about the toyota brand UBS, that other brands won't work? Or why the other USB cord wouldn't work?

...why the other USB cord wouldn't work?
It may be the other cables you tried were 'charging only' cables with no data lines in them.

not to muddy the waters...but...I own a 2023 Venza Limited and I am able to use my I-phone 13 to wirelessly access navigation, apple music, my phone and messaging and perhaps other apple apps I've yet to employ...bluetooth is all that is used...for connectivity as far as I am aware...

My friend purchased the same that I have and he said it worked flawlessly. Not sure what brand you purchased?

I am now thinking you have a have wifi connection built into the car or if one is installed at factory.
The Bluetooth adapter alone can’t connect to the without it I’m told.
So I would have to buy a mobile wifi device as well and pay for a signal on top of it.
It’s not worth the hassle, I’ll just plug in my iPhone to usb for now. 🤷🏻
