I didn't find any other thread on here (which isn't too surprising considering the D7 & D8 are new).

Saw the video on The Car Care Nut (click here for vid) which started me thinking. Anyone happen to have any experience using the D7 (Amazon link) or D8 (Amazon link)? Or experience with XTOOL in general?

One of the things I miss about my VW is the ease and affordability of reading and programing the car via Ross-Tech VCDS (Vag-com). The thing I don't miss about it is the car snacking on it's own engine. Of course the XTOOL isn't just limited to one make so I can see this being even more useful.

Much thanks for any info.

If you own a a windows laptop and are good with google searching or torrents you can get techstream for free. Just order a Mini VCI J2534 cable which some come bundled with the software.I have less than 50.00 invested and was able to disable front seat belt alarm, change blinker from 3 flash to 4 flash and use keyfob to roll down windows and pano roof.

zzyzzx I was thinking likewise. If the updates are mainly for the latest year cars and you don't have the latest year car maybe "updates" are not needed. If you operate a auto repair business you might need to do the updates so you can work on the latest vehicles.

My dealer wanted $80+ just to program the remote to power down the windows. That’s BS given the amount of customizable features in the car. Hell, my old Fusion came with the ability stock, you just needed to read the manual to find out. For this reason alone I’m debating getting a D8 so I can customize whatever I want.

Why Toyota doesn’t enable this ability is beyond me. They allow you to change the chirp sound when locking the doors, so why not the windows? I needed to perform a weird song and dance to turn off the chirp on my Tacoma but at least the ability was there.

I have the D8 and my honest opinion.... It's awful. The interface is buggy and the app so unstable that it's borderline unusable. Live data streaming is so egregiously slow that it is also unusable. I go into live data, then make a coffee, run some errands, go to bed for the night, and maybe the tool will be responding the next day.... Yea, it's that bad. If you try to search the live data for a particular sensor, the app locks up and you have to force it to close. If you try to sort by name, the app freezes and you have to force it to close. The data is so slow that it's of no real diagnostic value. It's hard to tell if your O2 sensor is working correctly when the value only refreshes every 30 seconds or so... if you can even get it to show at all. It took me an hour and working through several app lock-ups, just to pull a transmission oil temp reading... I'm not kidding... Save your money.

Support is from Shenzhen China and basically nonexistent. In short. XTool sucks. The people peddling it on YouTube are, in many cases, compensated for their opinions and should not be trusted. If they even show the live data stream in their reviews, it's heavily edited and they cut out all the delays, lockups, etc to hide the true experience from you.

I had high hopes for the tool. I returned it for a refund from Amazon and paid more for something else.

I am stunned by your negative experience with the Xtool PreBanMan! I do think you must have just gotten a rare bad lemmon or have some other ancillary problem.

Our shop has more than 12 scanners, and while some are fairly basic, and others have been a nice suprise, the D8 is just outstanding! It has become our go to device in the shop.

Our inbox is full of quick and helpful responses from DirectXtool (an authorized dealer who sells on Amazon as well).

In one case, we had a need to program a key on a vehicle that the device did not yet have an update for. When I emailed DirectXtool, they sent me back an email within a few hours and offered a beta upload to address our problem. This device covers all brands, and they said the udate they sent me was not scheduled for release for another 40 days. But they saw our need, and helped. Who does that?! I have never had that kind of support from any of the other tool manufactures.

I have got to admit I was a little concerned about buying such an inexpensive scanner. 700 bucks seemed just too good to be true for a scanner that needs to perform at the level our shop requires, and I advocated against it in our budget meetings. But after putting this thing through its paces on the shop floor, I am amazed!

Another thing that really makes us convinced your experience was an anomaly PreBanMan is your experience with slow results. My gosh man, this thing just blazes! In fact I had to be shown several real time YouTube videos (Yep YouTube again:), before I relaxed my position on its purchase, since we have all had that experience of slow scanners you speak of PreBanMan, it was one of my primary concernes. Yet one thing we noticed was that nearly every owner and reviewer that post anything on this device remarkes about its speed. You are the first and only one we have ever come across that has experienced this issue.

I can't help but wonder, Did you buy the thing from a non authorized dealer? One of the post I read out there did, and warned against it. But they did say that when they asked DirectXtool for support they still graciously responded with support.

One of the reasons almost all of us wind up with multiple scanners is that some seem to excel in one area but not others. We have not really found this units weakness yet, but we will share anything we do find. At last weeks budget meeting, we agreed to buy a couple more. There is too much competition among the mechanics for the dumb thing, and our road mechanic seems to like to take it with him on his calls, which causes some hard feelings. I personally like him to take the less expensive unit, and leave the higher dollar ones in the shop.

By having a few D8's to compare side by side, our odds of finding any shortcommings, or inconsistencies between units will go up. If we do get a unit that acts up or shows any of the attributes you saw PreBanMan, we will come back and share on this forum.

But for now I am just astounded at your experience. Good luck brother.

Just picked up a Xtool A30M which is roughly equivalent to a D7. So far I have got it to auto scan and have started downloading some special functions. I got it to diagnose any problems that arise with my 2022 Camry Hybrid and 2017 Sienna. Seems to work for that purpose. I got the window wipers to turn on and off. So there is communication. The other reason I got it was to change the parameters of the turn signal from three blinks to six or seven. Also to turn off the seat buzzers. So far I'm overwhelmed with all the stuff in this app and can't find the section to make these changes. But I'm still studying as much info I can find on it. Wish the info was more detailed though. Almost went with the Carista app and module since I have read others where successful changing those parameters, but did not want to pay the monthly fees and thought the A30M was better at diagnosing than Carista. Maybe I'm wrong.

Allway,

I just purchased a D7 as well, primarily for potential trouble code scanning, but also to program another smart key. I verified with Xtool that key programming would work before purchase. They asked for my VIN and were very responsive, confirming that this would (I have a 2016 AValon). I also would like to program the windows down with remote function, but I do not think that the xtool D7 has access to this type of customization. I didn't see this anywhere in the tool menus or in xtools documentation (admittedly limited). This wasn't my expectation when I purchased, so no loss there, but would have been a bonus. Have you been successful in finding these customizations?

The D8 is on sale on Amazon for 30% off from the Xtool Store. Was for hours but may still be there or come back. At $489.00 is same price at the D7.

Per the CarCareNut the D8 will be very similar in commands to Techstream. I trusted the CarCareNut and Scotty Kilmer reviews and what they said. I thought this was a good buy for the D8 and pulled the trigger today. Also saw the D8 has a blue tooth version now and MAYBE why the D8 is on sale at 30% off and free ship.

I'm still having issues with my D7. The oxygen sensor and A/F sensor graphing is awful. I am working with tech support after owning this for a year. I'm presenting working with a 2007 Highlander and the A/F graph is essentially a slightly wiggly line. Also it fails to enter key programming mode. I had to resort to manual intervention to program a replacement remote receiver. Still a lot of bi-directional functions that work but haven't been needed. I was able to reset the ABS light on a 17 Tacoma last week and was able to find the intermittent sensor issue.
