Was thinking of buying a Kluger, but now decided to have a go at the 2006 RAV4 because it costs around $10k less and is a lot less thirstier.
I dont intend to go off roading, just want a "SUV".
Anyone in Australia bought/driven the 2006 RAV4 ?
Please let me know what you think about it.

We just ordered ours

The order was placed last night for a V6 RAV4. The power difference between the 4 cylinder and the V6 is huge - quoted at around 165 for the 4 and 265 for the 6, yet the full consumption of the two is almost identical.

We drove the 4 and found it OK in town, but I was concerned that it wouldn't have much passing power when cruising at 70 mph. The V6 keeps up, and even beats, most things on the road.

I've read a number of reviews. Here's a nice one: http://www.caranddriver.com/roadtests/10394/toyota-rav4-limited-4wd-v-6.html

I test drove a 4cyl limited before opting for the V6. It had enough power for the Rav frame and would have done the job just fine. But my ego and inner child needed some more power, as provided by an extra 100 horse power! =) The V6 with 269 horses was just too FUN to pass up (especially considering it does not eat much more fuel than the 4)

If you are looking at two different models of vehicle ... try to do what I did ... *if your dealers are ok with it*

Set the 2 cars next to each other on a dealer's lot and sit in each for a long while ... then test drive them one after the other. Spend 30 min in each car, and look at EVERYTHING about them ... how the doors open, how the knobs feel, how the glove box works, how the back seats feel, how the stereo sounds etc etc. This will give you instant comparison and it is how I chose the very well designed and comfortable Rav4.

Have fun!

Did you try the 4 cylinder on the highway? We found it fine in town too, but our concern was highway use and we we're able to do a good test drive to see the acceleration at 70-80 mph speeds. Given the vehicles shape, weight, and only 166 hp, I wouldn't expect the 4 cylinder to do very well. The V6 should be fun - when we finally get it.

I assume you were "not" able to do a test drive? (missing word maybe?)

I did a test on a local highway (70 Km/h -or- 44Mph limit) with the 4 and it passed fine ... But I never really opened it up on a "freeway" with higher speed limits.

None of the reviews mention anything about lack of passing power at highway speeds on the 4 cyl, so I assume it would be "passable" (pun intended) However ... The reviews almost ALL mention the audible "whyne" of the 4 cly that comes into the cabin when passing ... So the 4cyl may just require a bit more "push" to get it to pass at high speeds.

You will enjoy the 6 ... I know I do! ... Wooo hooo ... time to drive to work! =)

You are correct!

I meant ti say that we were NOT able to drive it above 60 MPH, so couldn't tell how it would feel on I-95 where most vehicles cruise at around 75.

I like to know that if I have to pass someone quickly, or accelerate from a slow road onto a busy 75 mph road, I can do so without worrying whether the vehicle can make it. The V6 should have NO problems! (I drive a Passat 1.8T, and as long as I get the RPM over 2000 it does very well.)
