A bit of history

I had for several years ponderd upon buying a Hilux pickup truck but
only being available with the 2,5 Diesel engine and low spec trim at the
time iput that tought on hold and bought a 1994 4Runner 3.0TD witch i
have had for 1,5 years. But august 2008 word got around that
the 2009 hilux would be available with an updated 3 liter diesel engine from
the Landcruiser with 171Hp and 252lb ft torque and the high spec SR+ trim
So the 27.1.09 i went to the local dealership and orderd on a brand new
Hilux 3.0 D-4D "D-Cab" SR+ with, hardtop, Navi, bed inlay and a heavy duty tow hitch.

A modern diesel engine is the thing, 40Mpg highway and even in city driving you still get 28mpg with this truck. Compare that to the Tacoma with the 2,7 gas engine and a manual trans, it only gets 22mpg at best and it`s underpowered. No wonder why you would want diesel engines in your trucks.

The plans are comming soon, just some details i have to work out first.

Thanks guys, ive just had the first proper "maiden voyage" with my new ride today, and man.. it`s a nice drive. It got heaps of pulling power anywhere in the rpm range and is very quiet, ive driven 50miles (80km) today and the fuel gauge has yet to move. Gonna put a trailer (containing a snow-thro) on it tomorrow and se how it does.

Proper picures will arrive tomorrow if the weather is good.

Update

The first order has been made, new rear lights that should level up the apperance a few notches. It also has an added bonus of saving nearly 10W on the rear parking lights and 40W when using the break lights (since LED`s are so energy effcifient).
The LED bulbs im to order later are going to add to the power savings when using indicators and parking lights enabeling me to have the parking lights, enmergency lights or the dome light on for extended periods without draining the battery with the engine switched off.

Update:

Today i have 2 small projects, the first is changing the bulbs and making a little review, second im going to fix that gap on the tail gate.

Bulbs

Here is the original bulb, a GE produced standard bulb, nothing special at all.
Image

There is 30 years of innovation between these 2 bulbs
Image

The new bulb mounted, it looks a lot better than the old one just sitting there.
Image

The judgement:

GE standard: yellow brownish light, unfocused and small hotspot
and a short asymetic bend. it`s all to clear that this bulb has been made
on the original standard from over 30 years back.

Image

Philips X-power: Pretty white light, somewhat whiter than the Vision plus
bulb by the same company. very wide and powerfull hotspot, sharp asymetric
bend and very little glare above cutoff. the only thing i would want is a little
more white light. I have no reason do doubt the +80% rating.

Image

The plate used is a big plywood plate painted white.
Image

Lo beam: Here you can see how sharp the cutoff is on these bulbs, very wide
beam of light with very little glare. The light is projected where it should be.
Image

Hi beam: I got nothing to put my finger on here, the hi beam reaches about 50meters
longer than before.
Image

Tailgate

The picture says it all, when the tailgate is closed there is almost a 5mm gap
between the tailgate and the body. Ths allows snow, sand and water to enter
my hardtop, and i just had to solve that problem.
Image

#1. finding a door seal that would fit the application, i went trough a dusin seals
before i found one that looked promising
Image

Here is what you need: One pre cut seal, a scissor, a philips screwdriver, and a 10mm
socket.
Image

After trying a smal piece of this seal i found out that there where a couple of
brackets that got in the way, these had to be removed. this is where you need
the 10mm socket and the philips screwdriver.
Image

Image

After removing the 2 brackets i could mount the door seal, it was a easy job.
Image

Result: The seal fit perfectly, now the 3 elements are keept where they should be
outside the hardtop. You saw it here first. ;)

Update:

This update came a few weeks earlier than i planned for. :)

Here are the original lights, they`r ok but looks a bit "dandy"
Image

The light is held in place by 2 bolts and a couple of studs
Image
Image

The old light (Hella) and the new (ESDEPO). you may also notice that the new light has 4 bulbs, il explain this later
Image
Image

The new light requires removing the top bulb and changing the middle on with a amber.
Image
Image

This pic shows the white plug, even tho the original light had only one foglight and
one bak up light, the plugs on both left and right contains both so when i get the
LED bulbs there will be fog and backup lights on both sides.
Image

Before and after

Image

Well, not a bad improvment for a 10min job? any toughts?

Hi Zandro.

Nice reading and lots of great pictures.

I'll be picking up my 2009 Hilux D-Cab 3.0 SR+ automatic next weekend.

I was too thinking about switching to the led's at the back later on. Do you know if there is a clear glass for the brakelight in the middle? Anyway fun to se how one should do it..

I'll check back with you later on and se what you are upp to - and of course post som pictures of my baby.

Keep up the good work!

/ Perra

Thanks and congratulations to you too Perra, i bet you payed a hell of a lot lot less money than i did. I got mine for 395.000NOK with discounts on both the car and the extras, a good deal... at least by norwegian standards.

As for the 3rd brakelight, im looking into it and there seems to exsist but i havent found anyone who retails these yet.

Looking forward to those pics.

If I were to convert what I paid for my Hilux into Norwegian currency - it equals 252.00NOK.

I don't have the lether or GPS option (the GPS isn't available yet in Sweden) - but mine is automatic.

But still there is a big difference in price.

I'm putting on chrome 20" right away and a DVD/LCD in the roof for my backseat passengers:) My dealer will take care of the above before I pick it up. I just have to pay and turn the key..:)

I looked at the swedish toyota site and you seem to have the SR trim (no +), the norwegian SR+ and the Swedish HG (high grade) trim are the same besides some minor details and that we can have the SR+ with a manual gearbox (witch i have) but + or not, you will love it. Ive had mine for almost a month now and it so effortless to drive, it takes anything i throw at it: bad weather, slippery snowy roads, steep hills or everything at once. :D

#22 ·
On the web and on the salespaper there is no model called SR+ i Sweden, but thats the one im getting. Apparently Toyota Sweden decided to imoport this model as well.

The Swedish SR+ is the HG, but whitout the leather and chromed door steps. TCS/Antispinn and 17" is mounted, aswell as all the other HG options.

I was aiming at the SR, but the price up to SR+ was about 2000SEK :) Hard choice.. NOT.

One week to pickup..

#23 ·
Well that`s interesting, didn`t know that you could get the SR+ in sweden. So the one your getting is pretty much the same as mine, besides the leather and chromed door steps. When did you order yours? i orderd mine in january and it was at the last second, a day later and i would have had to wait until august or september.

#24 ·
I ordered mine in early mars. When my dealer checked there was one in Malmö for delivery right away. He said that i usually takes two weeks to get it upp to where I live- which is in the middle of Sweden.

Maybe I was lucky getting one?

I was thinking about buying a 06-08, because the almost look the same. But when this deal came I couldn't resist a new one with automatic gearbox.

Whats up with the prices on the norweigan Toyotapage? 3.0 D4D DoubleCab auto - 657 000NOK?

Is it that more expensive with automatic gearbox?

#25 · (Edited)
I think you must have been lucky because mine was also stored at Malmø too and when the dealer checked the inventory there was only one left with the specs i wanted, and the other 3.0 D4D left where automatic and in other colors.
There are many changes that makes the 09 worth having, the automatic aircon with filter, the new 5speed auto, trip computer (3.0 D4D), large brakes ( SR+), tinted front windows and dark tinted rear windows (SR+), new sports seats (SR+) BA/VSC/TRC and EBD (SR+) and other improvments to chassi and suspention.

The prices? to make a long story short...

The government recently changed the car tax so that emissions (Co2) in addition to engine volume, gross veight and horsepower is used to decide how much new cars are to be taxed, this is bad news for cars with auto trans since they emitt a good deal more Co2 than the manual versions. The norwegian government are leeches and tyrants who squeeze auto owners everywhere they can with taxes and we get nothing in return.

bah.. i get angry just talking about it....

#26 ·
Ok, that "explains" the outrageous price on automatic transmission. I've heard about you guys in Norway, that the goverment is taxing everything like crazy. I hade a 30" boat and a guy from Norway was intrested.. but he mentioned something about tax/bhp and it would cost a tremendus amount to import it from Sweden. You could import the engine apart from the boat and that would be cheaper.. but a lot of problems..

He didn't buy it - A swedish guy did :)

We are taxed for life - thats it I'm afraid.

Mine is black as well if I didn't tell u earlier.

I saw a Tundra yesterday and damn they are FAT.. just wish they were made for our climate.

What are the functions of the trip computer? I can't find information about it..
