04 Clutch slave cyl toast?

Hi i have been replacing the clutch in my 04 corolla and when I was almost done and put the slave cylinder back on the engine it was hard to return the slave cylinder piston to get the actuator pin situated and i had to open the bleeder valve and push pretty hard to get the cyl to retract so i could put the actuator pin in and bolt it on the engine i noticed some rust inside where the piston was.

After i got the slave cyl installed I then pressed the clutch and the clutch pedal gets hard to press and if i go tap on the slave cyl with a hammer it will return . I have a theory that the piston expanded up to the rusty part and then got rust in the piston and is now seizing ,i didn't open the bleeder valve as i took the master cyl off so the cyl might have crept up to the rust and fubared it and need a replacement or am i missing something else?
thanks.

Just wanted to update my Issue with the clutch it was indeed the slave cylinder i changed/bled it and the clutch works and drives fine . I took the old slave cyl apart and seen where rust had gotten around the piston and must have been seizing it so it was toast.. thanks for confirmation that the slave cyl was likely the issue.
