05 Fog Light retrofit

Hi-

I just picked up my new 05 Access Cab, Silver, IL4, 4x4 SR5. I'm very happy and have only two mods I'd like to do. One is a soft tonneau (already ordered a Truxedo LoPro), the other is fog lamps.

I'm planning to buy the factory fog lamp kit from toyotapart.com, (http://www.toyotapart.com/product.asp?pID=390103&cID=111) and install the lights into the dummy sockets in the bumper.

I would think that the wiring loom would be the same in all the 05's so the connectors would be pre-wired in but, looking around behind the bumper, I don't see anything. I guess I'll have to
run the wires, plug the included relay into the fuse box, and run the switchwire through the bulkhead to one of the switch blanks on the dash. (The kit says it includes the plugs, relay and switch.)

Has ANYone done this? Since the kit includes all the parts, this SHOULD be easy. My main concern is where to plug the relay. I looked in the fuse/relay box, but didn't see any obvious fog light jack.

Thanks in advance for any info!

Hi John,

Toyota typically pre-wires their vehicles. My guess would be that the kit will include lamps with a short pigtail that will plug into harness that is already part of the vehicle. Toyota usually clips the harness to a frame rail, however, you might check behind the plastic splash shield in the wheel well area.

The relay should plug in to the relay box. There should be an empty spot. You might want to check the owner's manual to see if it indicates where the fog lamp relay is located.

Installation should be fairly easy and straight forward. Toyota's fog lamp installation instructions are very detailed.

Good luck with the install.

Thanks for the info r_egan.

My salesman's "I'm telling you this as a freind" speech included "tips" such as "Never install electrical equipment that is not Toyota certified and installed by a Toyota tech, because you can blow out the CPU 'brain' in the truck, and replacement is, like, 3 grand..." ie: "Let us over-charge you to install those things."

I'm not worried about the Fog light install TOO much, since I'd be getting the Toyota Factory Fog Kit, but I don't wanna blow up my new ride!

Don't let the dealership intimidate you. I worked for an automotive lighting manufacture developing accessory lighting for the automotive OEMs. In fact, I developed several fog lamp programs for Toyota.

The kits typically are not difficult to install. Sounds like your dealer is trying to scare you into letting them install the lamps.

Good call going with the factory kit as trying to add non-OEM lamps in a factory opening results in something that obviously looks like a bolt on after thought.

Again, thanks for the reply r_egan.

I'm waiting until I get a confirmation - from someone who has actually done the install - that the factory fog kit will basically plug-and-play with no issues. (Or, better yet, with a description of how the install can be done.)

dude wait.. Dont spend 300+$ yet. I want fogs just as bad. some1 will make some aftermarket lights that fit for much cheaper. :naughty:

I don't know if someone will make aftermarket fogs that fit the Taco bumper holes... I've posted about retrofitting fogs on three Taco forums for almost a week, and have not had a reply from anyone who has actually installed them! There may not be that big a demand, as most will have gotten fogs with the V6 package already.

If ONE person would post that they've done it, and it works, I'd make the purchase... :sosad:

I'm looking to buy a 4x4 Reg Cab Taco. It has the SR5 package, but I'm disappointed that it doesn't even have an option for fogs. I'm going to buy this kit when I take delivery of the truck...I'll let you all know how I make out...

Also, is it me, or is that kind of pricey for a fog kit (I bought a OEM kit for my Focus for $150).

I purchased the same kit from Toyotapart.com. It comes with the switch, relay, lights and wires that are about 6inches long. I to thought that I would just plug in into the "factory" wire harness. I could not find one and ended up taking it to the dealer. They took a day and a half to finish the install and said that they had to make a harness from scratch. The install that they made was very good but it is not different than a PIAA harness. If you are going to buy the kit be prepared to make the harness and wire it through the firewall.

If I had it to do again, I would find an aftermarket light that fits the stock location. That being said, I am very happy with the stock lights. Total cost for the kit was $360 shipped and $150 to install.

Good luck.

I forgot to add that I have recently purchased two fog light switches to install some extra backup lights and some driving lights. The switches were about $36 a piece from Toyota-parts.com. I would recommend the OEM switch with the aftermarket lights as the switch makes it look right.

That's what I would end up doing. As for above, so you are telling us that the kit really isn't a plug-n-play kit...that some modifications have to be done? I figured it would be as easy as running a wire through the firewall to a fuse box then to the lights and installing the switch... maybe this isn't worth my time (I want the fogs, but not at the expense of a lot of time and/or money)

I installed my own fog lights from toyotapart.com last month. It took a couple of hours and was pretty easy - wiring is not an unusual thing for me to be doing. Check out http://www.yourtacoma.com/faq/ and look at the fog light install (there is also one there for a fog light modification). If nothing else, it should give a good idea of what is involved.

I just ordered the stock fog lights kit from toyotapart and they have to order "one or more parts". I didn't order the harness from eBay, but instead, I'm going to make my own. That way I'll be able to color code the wires to my liking and use plastic shroud instead of just the electrical tape (or plastic sheathing) to protect the wires. I'll try to post pics of my harness and install, if I don't get too frustrated :D

Alright! :clap:I got my stuff from toyotaPart.com via DHL today when I got home from classes. Thankfully I don't have much going on tonight and I was able to install them. It took me 2 1/2 hours and that included a trip to autozone (to get some crimp connectors) and wally world (to get a 15A fuse, since it didn't come with one). I was going to write a howto on making your own wiring harness, but I didn't have the time. I ended up making everything as neat as possible, as you can see. I did stumble on this wiring set that looks like it could work for the fog lights, if the connector was the right type...anyone know what the hell its there for?

Those are the wires I'm tlaking about. And for the final product...

Note that I put the fog switch in the "OEM" position...there was no grinding to do here, although it was a little challenging feeding the wires up there...
Image

Also, I didn't have to puncture a new hole in the rubber pass-through, I ended up using a hanger to attach the wires and feed through where the hood release goes through...
Image

I attached the relay to the side of the compartment...it shouldn't get too wet there...I may end up waterproofing it with silicon caulk before the winter...

Heres from the voice of experienc:: I bought the foglights from toyota part.com and the lights just snap into the factory holes. If you have no experience in wiring aftermarket accessories, this could be a chore.I did mine in about an hour. The relay is an aftermarket Bosch type fog light relay and all the wiring need to be made up from the foglights to the relay and from the switch to the relay. If you have a base model truck it will not be prewired. If you would like more detailed info,e-mail me at racer200162@yahoo.com. I will be more than happy to give you the exact way I did my wiring and install.

Yeah, I moved mine to the same spot you did. I had a hard time seeing the switch behind the steering wheel while driving when it was in the lower position. Much better now. Took about five minutes total to move it.
