I noticed that the new Avalon has a manual shift mode. I was wondering if anyone has actually tried this feature and if it really helps with getting more preformance out of this car.

When I test drove the car, I didn't try it out.

I just bought a limited 2 weeks ago. I used the manual shift mode in freeway traffic. It works OK. I read somewhere that it will automatically shift up if you come near redline. I have not gone this high in the rpm range to confirm this yet, because of the new engine. I have about 500 or so miles left on the break in period until I will really push it.

lol automatic upshifting would make it totally useless :) it will auto downshift as you come to a stop/slow down though :)

Yeah. All manumatic or sport shifting cars has that feature. It won't let you overrev the car and it automatically shifts for you. When you stop, it'll automatically go down to the first gear. It does that to my Infiniti FX35.

It's a Honda that's why RSX. Honda engines are known to have a high rev limit. 12k RPM on the S2000. Man, that's what I called Naturally Aspired engine to the max. :thumbup:

The Honda motorcycles mostly had the highest rpm redlines in the industry. I remember in 1959 looking at a small Honda twin with a redline over 10,000rpm. That’s when most Hondas were sold at gas stations.

On my 06 the only useful operation is to downshift into 4th to keep it in 4th all the way up grades on the highway.

But for general purposes it’s not very useful and the auto frequently picks a better time to shift.
Just my opinion though.

As to max performance I bought the Ave so my car would last. High rev games don’t help.

Edit;
I drove 10 miles at 3500rpm forgetting (a few days ago) to go back to auto mode. Dumb! But more than my stipidity it’s a testament to the quiet and smooth ride of the Avalon car.
