I would like to upgrade my 1999 corolla speedo with a speedo tach because I have a 5spd and frankly.. I want to see the rpms.

Would a 2000 cluster with a 99 even though there's no connection where the tach should go from behind the cluster?

Are there any steps to be taken so this can be done? I would like to change it. If I cant, oh well.

Theres an issue with the clusters. I believe the only clusters that work for the 98-99 model year are from those two years only.

The cars from then on, had some electrical changes, and long story short it wont work properly (ie. the left hand signal doesnt work and the hazards flash some combo like that).

if ya got a 99, find one that specifically has the tach and is from 98-99 to ensure compatibility.

EDIT: I think 00 will work just fine. Heres a website from a TN member with alot of useful information about the cluster swap: http://www.crypticlineage.net/diy/mods.html

Thank You very much. According to the link you've sent me, all I have to do is swap the speedos from the clusters to ensure correct mileage. I'll give it a shot, and if worse comes to worse, just return it, right? :)

And thank you everyone else.

Nope. 98-99 is one design, 00-02 is wired differently. There's a writeup somewhere on these forums on how the pinout differs and I think you can only switch it one way, newer cluster in older vehicle, bypassing some extra circuitry while you're rewiring; can't use the older cluster in the newer model because it lacks that circuitry.

Dude you are wrong.

98-00 are one and 01-02 are another.

I own a 2000 and tried to put in a cluster from an 02 - trust me.

Thats it. There are four or five screws on the back that go through the circuit film into the speedo. Take those out and it will be loose. IIRC, take off the plastic front and the black trim around the gauges and pull the speedo out the front. Install is reverse of the removal. Might want to take the front apart first so it's not bouncing around in there.

All of our cars are odometer exempt. (Over 10 years). We don't have to report mileage to insureance or the DMV. At least in WI we don't. Not sure about other states. I personally wouldn't do it. I got screwed once and it went the other way. I had a Caddilac that needed a new cluster and the old mileage carried over. It was 50k more than my old one had on it. Lost $1000 in resale value in about 20 minutes.

Look at this thread to eliminate any confusion about the difference between the early and late instrument clusters. There is a nice big picture of the printed circuit on each type. I was easily able to compare my junkyard find from E-bay and make sure I had the later type.

Thank You. Now I know what to look for. I knew something wasn't right.
