2000 camry - steering wheel makes noise

Hello:

I have a 2000 Camry that started to make a noise last week.
The noise only occurs when the wheel is turning.
It sounds like either someone rocking in a chair or maybe like the sound boats make while tied to a dock.
The noise is not loud but audible enough to hear over low volume radio.

Is there anything I can check or should I just bring it in for a mechanic to check?

Thanks

You mean wheels turning as in angle, not rotation? It is from within the cabin or in the engine bay?

If it's from the steering wheel itself then there's a cable clockspring. if it's from the engine bay, then it may be a number of things, such as u-joint, mounting bushings, joints, etc.

It is when I turn the wheel left and right as part of normal driving.
It is coming from inside the cabin and sounds like it is coming from the wheel or steering column.
The noise sounds like it is close to me when I am driving.

This is not a good description of a noise. Is it a clunk, squeak, grind, knock, splashing, tapping, groaning, chugging, etc???

Put some silicone grease or spray where the steering column shaft goes into the rubber boot. If it's not that it could be the clockspring, I've heard them make a similar noise.

Both my 99 and my 01 have done this in the winter. I used white lithium grease last winter. It just started doing it again.

Is the silicone better?

Edit: Mine is not the same noise. My is more of a squeaking. It also seems to only happen when the wheel is at the same time. e.g. 1 noise per lock.
