I have a 2001 corolla 5 speed and the clutch is starting to slip. I called around for estimates to replace the cluch and it isn't justifiable to pay a mechanic considering miles and the cars value. So it looks like I'm gonna have to do it myself or get a different car. I'm pretty good with my hands. I've done some research but I haven't been able to find exactly what I want. Here are a list of questions I have.

-Does anyone know of a detailed guide for the 1998-02 clutch replacement guide
-what tools will I need
-where do I get durable quality parts.
-what are all the parts I should replace while Im in there?

I hope this will be a great learning experience!

Thanks!

Lots of how-to videos on YouTube of the clutch replacement process.

It's about the same on anything with a 1ZZ-FE, but actually the 98-02 is slightly easier than the later models.

You need basic mechanic's tools - ratchets and sockets and wrenches and screwdrivers, plus a decent floor jack capable of supporting the transmission to move it and of course jackstands to hold the vehicle up. You'll probably need an impact wrench to remove the flywheel, electric ones are fine. The $40-50 one from Harbor Freight is ok for the price, or you can get something nicer, even a cordless one.

You can get OEM parts online, or get the OE stuff as aftermarket (Aisin brand), or other brands like LuK or Sachs are decent for clutches, Timken makes good bearings/seals, etc. You can get aftermarket stuff at places like Rockauto for less, the vendor forum on here even has an extra 5% off code.

You can consider replacing the rear main seal while you're in there, plus any of the driveline parts that have to come out to allow the transaxle to come off. Pilot bearing should come with the clutch kit. Might need a flywheel depending on the condition it's in.

Might as well put in new transmission fluid as well - 75W-90 gear oil thats MT-1 rated.
