The truck is a 2002 double cab 4x4 limited with power windows and locks. My truck does not have keyless entry. I want to add the system that came from the factory. Also i wanted to know if the system was there but just was not operating because not programmed. I have the sticker and it does not show keyless entry at all. Where would the keyless entry system be located? I have searched everywhere and can not find an answer.

I think the keyless entry was still a feature of the Toyota VIP alarm system in 2002. (If I'm wrong, someone please correct me.) For many years, Toyota sold their own alarm package as an option, and keyless entry was integrated with the alarm system rather than the main body computer. The benefit to that design is that the dealer or the new owner could add keyless and the alarm if they chose to. Toyota's VIP alarm goes in really easily. You buy the electronic parts (computer, key fobs, piezo buzzer) and a wiring harness for your exact year/model. It's a bit tricky pulling apart the dash to get the wiring harness hooked in to all the right spots, but the harness is idiot-proof and connects to all of the existing factory connectors pretty easily.

I beleive it was in 2003 when keyless entry first became a more typical option, and then it was discovered that the guts of the alarm system were included with it. There's a good tech article at http://www.customtacos.com about turning on the alarm functions on a 2003 with factory keyless entry.

I have a 2002 Tacoma 4x4 with power door locks but no remote (bought the vehicle used). Let's see if I understand this: The 2002 Tacoma HAS an alarm system already installed and you just have to find the wires to connect it? If this is true, where do you find a remote that will accept the codes so I can use it?

Because the thread is 5 months old means I can't ask a question? I just joined this forum and just bought a new Tacoma. If you can't answer the question why did you even bother to post?

I am trying to help you. I asked you what you where doing. I will help you but you should have started your own post to ASK a question. Asking in the middle of someone elses is call hijacking. I dont car either way. But to get help ask for it and dont come off in a hard way. And to your question i have the answer.

Pissing match aside... :thumbdown

The alarm system is an option on the 2002 and earlier Tacoma's, and it was the only way to get keyless entry from Toyota. The Toyota alarm is designed in such a way to be a pretty straight-forward addition to the truck at any time. If you have the alarm system, then you have keyless entry.

On 2003-2004's with factory-installed keyless entry, the alarm system computer is already included, and it just takes a little work to add a glass breakage sensor and a flashing "security" light.

Thanks Toto. Someone else sent me an answer as well so I know what to do from here. At least there are people here really willing to help instead of trying to start a flame war.

okay, i'm new to this forum and it's a little confusing at first to find what I'm looking for....
but here it goes...

I have a 2003 Toyota Tacoma SR5 PreRunner with a factory installed keyless entry alarm system... It has a lock and unlock buttons on the front and a red panic button on the back of the remote.... I want to ACTIVATE the beep sound when I lock and unlock the truck...
How do I do this without taking it to the dealership and having them charge me for doing it??? (plus the closest toyota dealership is sort of a drive from my house and I want to make this as painless as possible)...

I had a Mitsubishi before this and by pressing and holding certain buttons on the remote, I could activate and deactivate the horn chirps and lights flashing and I was wondering if Toyota is the same way... There is NOTHING in the user manual on how to do this... that is why I'm here...
Any help is much appreciated!
Thanks

Keyless entry

hopefully someone can see this and help me. I just recently got a fairly nice condition 2002 Tacoma trd package. it is an extended cab, and it has power longs but in order to get in it I HAVE to use the key then unlock the rest of the doors from the inside. there also isn't a key with buttons on it. So I am wondering if it is possible to get a key and wire the truck or if I have to buy a new system and how much that would be. and sorry for not making a new thread, new to this and couldn't figure out how to do that
