I have an engine rattle on my Camry that annoys me like crazy. I have searched and read all the related threads that are similar to mine as old as they may be.
It only rattles loud enough for me to hear and be annoyed at 1400-1600 rpm, and especially when going slightly uphill, at light throttle inputs, with low engine load.
I have recently (within the last 6 months) replaced the water pump, alternator, belt, belt tensioner (twice because I believe this could be my issue), timing chain tensioner, VVT solenoid (due to leak), VVT oil passage filter, valve cover gasket, spark plugs, pcv (valve and hoses), front struts, and control arms.
The motor has 180,000 miles on it, and other than the rattle sound the motor runs and revs smoothly.
I will figure out how to attach a video I just took of me putting the car in drive with the ebrake on and holding the phone over the motor so y’all can hear what I am talking about.
Thank you for any feedback.

I have also just removed the belt and listened for the rattle as well and I don’t think I could hear it very much without the belt, so that could narrow it down to the accessories.
However I could not run it for long with the belt off as it was already hot, and without the belt on it is hard to hold it at the rpm that the rattle occurs.
Also, another symptom I forgot is a there is a consistent rattle when first start the car while the engine is cold until the engine warms up in the morning after first start for maybe 5 mins, but it sounds more consistent and less intermittent of a rattle.
Thank you for any help with this diagnosis.

Thank you both for your suggestions. I will do my best to try to verify the intake and exhaust manifold gaskets, and I have had exhaust leak as a guess of mine in the past as well.

From the other threads I’ve read with the rattle with the 2AZ, I have learned about the intake, rattle and the heat shield and catalytic converter rattle.

So last night after I made the video, I had my wife hold the engine revved up at the RPM the rattle is caused (with the motor in drive with her foot on the brake, I have a kind wife lol) and I used a ratchet extension to try and listen around the motor for the sound.

I listened to the heat shielding around the exhaust and it’s not coming from there. I even put the extension onto the cat converter and listened, but I did not hear it their either. It’s very difficult to pinpoint because I believe the sound travels around the motor. I was not able to pinpoint the sound with the ratchet extension (a pretty crude tool to listen with) between 1400 and 1600 RPM, but at idle if I put the ratchet extension on the nut that you use to release the tension on the tensioner, I could hear a slight rattle in it that mimics the sound that I hear at the problem RPMs.

However based on the sound, I don’t believe that the tensioner is my only rattle and am leaning towards one of y’all’s suggestions, or I’ve even thought VVT rattle or timing chain guide, because when I listen with my ear sometimes it sounds like it’s coming from the front of the motor, but I swear this sound travels around the motor. I did put the ratchet extension along the timing cover and I could not hear it through the ratchet.

I’m going to do more investigation please any more feedback would be appreciated or any suggestions

I know a very experienced local mechanic here in Houston that I’ve been putting off taking this to to have him diagnose because it runs fine and it’s just annoying. I just don’t want to miss a potential bigger problem if it’s timing chain guide or VVT sprocket.

RomanJohn1001, I thought your post was an ad at first, so I missed it. But yeah, I’ve never seen that tool before I’m going to look into it it seems very useful, and I hate being annoyed with random engine rattle sounds.

Today, I’m going to try and make another, better video today with a higher quality, plug-in microphone I have so that I maybe I can give y’all a better idea as I watched my video and it’s hard to hear the rattle over the normal sound of the motor, although if you listen closely around 16-18 second in the video it’s a little clearer sound of the rattle over the sound of the motor.

The rattle sound is not related to engine speed as in it does not follow the rpm of the engine like bearing knock would.

It’s always an intermittent rattle.

Cool! I think I’m going to go get one of those.

Does anyone think Thai sounds like knock, pinging, or preignition to anyone?

Because it sounds like that to me while driving.

I’m going to get some premium gas today while I’m doing my deliveries at work and see if that helps and make another video when I get home.

Update:

I did my deliveries at work yesterday, using the premium gas I filled up with.

There was no change to the rattle sound throughout the day.

Therefore, even though it sounds like pinging to me, sometimes that kind of leads me in a different direction away from pinging.

I haven’t had a chance to go by Harbor freight yet and get the mechanics stethoscope, but when I do, I will report back if I find out what the rattle was.

Everything I’ve read, and then also a lot of others experience, always points to the intake, manifold, rattle, which I know is common on my year Camry.

I had a similar problem with my 2AZFE (218k miles). You mentioned you ran the engine without the belt. What I did is removed the belt and I turned the accessory pulleys by hand looking for any roughness. It turned out to be the water pump. Try this on your a/c compressor, tensioner, water pump. Although you did change the latter two, I would check them just to be sure. Check for any play in the pulleys you cannot turn by hand. I hope this helps.
