Considering a 06 Highlander Hybrid for my daughter. 208K. I've done some research on general issues with the 1st gen, however, they hybrid model adds another layer to an aging car that I want to be aware of.

Specifically what do I need to be aware of when evaluating the hybrid model and specifically the components unique to the hybrid drive and control? I do most of my own work on cars, but that is what concerns me with a hybrid, I'm not sure that system is something I want to dive into, but perhaps it's relatively reliable.

Thank you.

My first concern with an old hybrid is replacement battery cost and availability. Perhaps others who have considered or owned/own hybrids can weigh in but you can also do a search on the topic. Here is one post from not too long ago that had some interesting input on the subject. There were several pages of hits so I'm sure there are other threads on the topic.

I would avoid the older high mileage hybrid model if the thought of dropping about $7000 for a new hybrid main battery is a deal breaker to you; if not then go for it as that any older Highlander model with 200k miles will need some work such as suspension, minor engine leaks, etc.

However, the hybrid model has additional cost of the older hybrid components to deal with like the inverter and main battery as well as the gasoline engine issues.

I would just buy your daughter an well sorted out non-Hybrid Highlander model if the overall cost of ownership is an major factor in your decision.

I might barely might consider such an Old hybrid for myself - Yet NEVER for my daughter. That would be inviting Murphy to visit. It would be a crXp shoot - maybe it will go another 100k or maybe just 100 miles. The cost of the hybrid battery repair is easily over $1K and could approach 2 - yikes.

Now if you know how to repair the HV batt system or a friend then Go For It.
