Interesting that neither Toyota Canada or Dealers can answer with confidence if the Canadian 2006 Yaris is or is not equiped with an immobilizer system...or if the security upgrades would add this feature..

I'm not impressed with Toyota Canada at this point...

My car is to arrive next week...

In reference to the the 2006 Yaris Owners Manual:

page 10 - references keys without Immobilizer....(rectangular opening for key ring)

Page 11 - references Keys with Immobilizer......(round opening for key ring)

And on page 14 and there is a note referencing the immoilizer sytem indicating Industry Canada compliance.

If your car has an "indicator" light as pictured on Page 13 - it apprears this is part of the immobilize system...

So which keys do you have? Anyone have the "indicator" light as pictured on Page 13 ?

Anyone know the answer? Toyota said they will respond within 5-7 days

I am driving an 06 Yaris RS and the keys do not have an immobilizer in them. Toyota immobilizer keys are quite thick, these keys are regular thickness. The master key has a remote built into it but no security. There is a security accessory part for the Yaris which would incorporate an alarm. This can only be added to your Yaris if it has a factory Keyless system. Most of the security systems that Toyota offer have a immobilizer built in, but this works only if the alarm has been tripped.
Will let you know if if find out more info.
Cheers.

Intersting - Have not heard from Toyota yet however a new "$87.50" security option is listed for "keyless" equiped cars....listening to the audio (when you click more) on the accessory configurator it indicates only "genuine" toyota keys can be used to start the car...

I'll post the formal answer when I geet it from Toyota...

I am still waiting for my Yaris to be delivered. The salesman has promised me that he can arrange to install a genuine Toyota immobilizer in my car but he has not been able to telll me the price for it up to now. He does have indicated that since I have keyless entry in my package, it is easy to have one installed for me. Here in BC, you can get a discount in insurrance if you have an immobilizer. So, in effect the device will pay for itself over time.

so I'm guessing the immobilser that's added on isn't in the key itself? Is it just the immobiliser that you're installing or the RS220 system with alarm and immobiliser?

I've had good experience with Magic 2-point immobiliser. It's ignition and throttle I think. The 3 point adds a cut in the fuel line. It's a transponder type so it's passive and will quality for ICBC discount.

I just ordered a 2006 Yaris 5-DR LE and the dealer offered to install an immobilizer as a $295 . So, I suspect that if you did not specifically ask for one, then you may not be getting one.
ASBO - Two questions:

1) Is your 2006 Yaris LE an "A" or "B" package ?
2) The immobilizer is it a Toyota product? If so kindly ask the dealer to provide the Toyota part number.

Look forward to your reply!

Thanks!

Team - The formal response from Toyota Canada.....

Thank you for contacting our Customer Interaction Centre and our President, Mr. Kenji Tomikawa. I have been asked to respond to your concerns.

We apologize for the confusion surrounding the immobilizer key on the 2006 Yaris. As we discussed, the immobilizer key is not available on any of the 2006 Yaris models. Also, there is no dealer-installed option that allows for an immobilizer.
The information found in the Owner?s Manual applies to all models (both American and Canadian) and explains all equipment; therefore, you may find some explanations for equipment not installed on your vehicle.

We do offer a security upgrade package for the 5 door ?A? suffix models (both the RS and LE); however, this is a dealer-installed option only.
We again apologize for the misinformation provided on www.toyota.ca. We will have this information corrected as soon as possible.
Your interest in Toyota is appreciated.
Yours truly,
Consultant, Customer Interaction Centre

Thanks twocati for spending so much time and effort to help us get the picture. Frankly, I am very disappointed. Some people believe that some, if not all, Toyota dealers will help customers to get immobilizers from outside sources. I hope to learn more about that from fellow members such as aszabo. Just curiosity, I really want to know more about the security upgrade that is available to A suffix cars. I still have a faint hope that some kind of anti-theft ability is already in B suffix cars (so that the upgrade is not available to them).

Just to clarify things, The immobilizer did not seem to be an "official" option, but was offered to me when they were trying to sell my the extended warranty, rust-proofing etc. I assume it is third party, but have yet to see it as the yaris will take another week or so since they did not have any LE's with a manual transmission readily available.

I got the "A" package, without keyless entry. I can report back when I get the car.

It will be 3rd party. We installed a Magic 2-point transponder immobiliser in our then new 2000 Corolla LE. Because it's a transponder, the thief won't know where your secret location is for the receiver so even if he had the transponder, he'll be wasting time trying to find the receiver. Hot wiring won't work since the ignition is immobilised anyway.

Well, I got my Yaris in, and it is a 3rd party immobilizer that the dealer installed. Funnily enough, the instruction sheet does not mention the brand. It is wireless, so you just need to have the transponder on your keychain, and they drilled a hole in the steering column to put the flashing red led.

I had a really bad experience with one of these on my 1995 Celica GT-S. The key rings both broke and would no longer hold onto any key ring. The LED that was drilled into my dash ended up becoming unglued and dangles there now, I glue it every once in a while. The system is set to a common radio signal so even though I never use the system intentionally anymore, the system activates itself.

Moreover, whenever I've had battery troubles the system turns itself on. So whenever it's on I assume in the back of my head that possibly I'm having battery problems.

I would not suggest getting one.

Here in Australia, the engine immobiliser, keyless entry system and power-everything are standard across all the Yaris models. Though, I had the security system upgraded to a full alarm system as a dealer option, including paint and interior protection, rust proofing and window tinting. The only factory option is the safety pack, which are the additional curtain and side airbags.

I just bought our 05 Echo sedan which is the same car as the Yaris and they didn't offer that option but I could get the factory alarm for $$$ but it was cheaper to go aftermarket and get a car starter with engine kill/immobilizer. It may not be the Quality of the factory Toyota one but it should work non the less. Maybe by the time the Yaris sedan comes out they will have that feature in them.

aftermarket cheapest and best way to go

After a hassle with the dealer over getting a 2nd keyless key ( shame on Toyota for only giving you one remote entry key when you PAY FOR the upgrade on package B ), I did reserach and found it was about the same money to have a lifetime warrantied keyless entry and passive IMMOBILIZER system installed in the Yaris. Oh, and they all come with TWO key fobs... several good ones to choose from.
That would be the way to go. And, it was all installed within a week of buying it. Toyota took two weeks to send the second key to our local dealer... then they had the audacity to suggest they may not refund the purchase price even though they had not cut or programmed the key. They did do it, but it wasn't without them having to " check into it " first. The new immobilizer and key fobs work great. The alarm is set on a proper setting and will not go off unless you break a window or actually pry the door/attempt to open- no stupid annoying false or over sensitive alarm noises. Then the immobilzer kills the ignition completely.
This is all Toyota needed to do- include the immobilizer and the 2nd key when you PAY to upgrade ( still shake my head at that one )and there would not be an issue. Great car, hopefully Toyota listens on this issue.

Hi bluet, does your immobilizer come with a switch so that it can be disarmed when you desire? Of course, for security reasons, it has to be operated with the transponder at hand. Otherwise, any person can switch off your system. I have a Curtis immobilizer but I don't seem to have such a switch on my car, may be I just do not know where it is. The user's manual suggests that there should be one. I am planning to ask the service manager about this when my car is due for service at 8,000km but now I think I can ask you to see if you know. I will appreciate your information.
