Anyone know what sensor this is,

and how to fix the leak?

 

What is leaking? It looks like the coolant temp switch, but...! Where is it leaking from, the thread part or the switch part?

 

What sealer should be used when this sensor switch is installed? Or I just need to tighten it up a bit more?

 

Can't tell from the picture what is leaking. If it is the thread part, Teflon Tape will work. If it is the switch part, replace it; the new switch should come with sealer on there.

 

I think it's leaking from the thread. I don't see any existing Telfon tape on the thread.

I just cleaned up the engine area around the sensor area. I'll observe in the next week or two if I can spot new leak again.

 

If it is leaking around the thread area, you can pull it off and put some sealer or Teflon tape on there to seal it back up. If you use sealer, you might have to let it dry first. Might have fluid behind the switch when you pull it off.

 

Not sure if it's ok to use like plumbing thread sealant or silicone gasket maker (right stuff, etc.) -- if that gets into the coolant system. Or there's a different kind of sealant appropriate for use.

 

Remember that if you pull that sensor, you will likely have coolant come out (assuming it's a coolant sensor). Sometimes it's a lot of coolant.

Unless you can verify a leak, I'd leave it.

If it is leaking, plumbers tape works fine.

 

Black dirt started piling up around that sensor every month. All other areas looked clean (I cleaned up the engine before).


I just cleaned up that area again. Will start observing every week or so.

If dirt starts getting collected right around that area that means there's something leaking out. I'll use teflon tape then.

What's the torque to install this sensor?

 

Drained coolant a bit, unplugged the electrical connector and removed the sensor using a 24mm deep socket. Wrapped the threads with teflon tape and re-tightened to 14ft lb --hope that's not too tight.

Will see if this takes care of the leak.
