I love my Rav4 but have had a reoccurring problem with the power back door for the past year or so. It never fails to open when using the dash button, the fob, or the button on the bottom of the hatch. However when I go to close it using any of those three methods it often starts to close then beeps again and goes back up. If I play with all three methods it eventually will close. As long as I could get it closed within a few tries, it wasn't so bad but often it is taking longer and longer to get it to close. The action is like closing an automatic garage door that goes back up if something breaks the beam as it sees an object and won't close until the object is removed.
I've done the hold the button to get 4 beeps and then again to get 2 beeps to reset but that does nothing. A few times it was so bad I've had to set the dash PBD setting to manual to push it closed but obviously that's not optimal nor should it be.
I took it to Toyota service and demonstrated for the guy at the desk the problem. However when he had mechanics look at it they couldn't get to reproduce so they just said they couldn't find a problem. Obviously if they can't see the issue they can't fix it. When I described it it seemed they thought I was a bit nuts. Not good.
Since it's behaving as if it is detecting something in the way of the hatch coming down I have to think that it has a safety sensor analogous to a garage door but when I asked at service they didn't know at all. So I came here to see if anyone could shed any light on this. TIA
