Hello everyone. I have been hearing this “clunk” noise when shifting from “drive” to “reverse” and viceversa for a while now. Recently it started happening when it is shifting from 1st gear to 2nd gear too. I checked the axles and they are good. I decided to look at the transmission side mount and the rubber is is clearly cracked at the bottom so I need to replace it. This might be the issue causing the noise.

I have always been told that if the transmission mount is bad the engine mounts are either bad as well or on their way out. The car has 123k miles. I do not see enough room to get the front and rear mounts unless the subframe is removed. Do you agree I should replace all the mounts together? I am going with OEM mounts.

Has anyone replaced their engine and/or transmission mounts? I can’t find any videos or information about gen 8 Camrys. I seen videos of previous generations and Lexus.

Thank you!

Thank you for posting this. It gives me an idea. I did the transmission mount and side engine mounts so far. I am waiting for a friend to come over next weekend to give a hand with the rear one and front one.

I test drove the car and I am still hearing the "clunk" noise when shifting from drive to reverse and viceversa. I did inspect the axle and there is no play but I will reinspect it once my friend comes over that weekend so I can get underneath the car and hear it when he shifts. I did replace the axle about 6 months ago because of the same noise but it was not as bad as now. I can hear the clunk also when it is shifting from 1st to 2nd and down shifting. It is weird because sometimes it will not make the noise. It progressively had gotten worse. I am hoping is not the transmission. I mean it drives fine but it is annoying to hear plus I do need to make sure I can fix whatever it is.

I still needed to replace the broken transmission mount so the mounts need to get done regardless. I have driven this hard through the years and I can understand why the mount was broken.

Update: So I had my neighbor come over to get in the my car and shift while I am underneath checking the axle. I just came home from driving the car like 20 mins ago and the noise was present. As soon as she started the car I got underneath it and she started shifting. We can not hear the noise! I was like "are you serious right now lol?" I got in my car and started shifting myself and no noise... I started joking around with her that she fixed it!

I still checked the axle and I felt a slight play but it does not seem like it is bad to me. I did noticed small play when shifting to drive and to reverse on the outer axle where it goes in the wheel hub. That is making noise but not as loud. It is almost as the axle nut is not tight enough. This could be making the clunk noise and gets louder as the hub warms up.

I had an extra axle nut so I removed the old one. I installed the new one this time paying more attention to the proper torque. In the process I noticed I had been using my impact tool at the lowest speed which does not let me use max torque. This made me wonder if the two engine mounts I already installed (top side and transmission side) were tight enough. I went back and retighten the bolts/nuts of all of the engine mounts. I was able to add about 1/4 turn of torque on them. I put everything back and drove the car all day yesterday and I never heard the clunk noise anymore. It sounds like it was the axle nut and/or a loose mounts bolts.

I am still replacing the other two mounts this weekend when my buddy stops by to help me out.

Well I was able to change the mounts on my Camry. The front one was not too bad as long as you can clear the wire harnesses and radiator hoses it came out through the top by the air box area(obviously removed)
For the rear one I was able to remove the longer bolt on the new rear mount (since it is pressed in) and get a M12 x 1.25 x 70mm with a nut to slide it in place after the rear mount was installed. I did hit the longer bolt from the old rear mount with a small sledgehammer until it came out. This helped remove the mount easier. I still had to remove the engine bracket that slide into the rear mount.

I believe the “clunk” was the loose axle nut. Once I retorque it did not make the noise anymore. I have not test drove the car too far after all the mounts were replaced but the car idles firmer and smoother. I did notice the old front mount was also bad. The rear and passenger side ones were still decent.

I believe all together easily took me around a full day at least 8 hours. It was not hard but tedious as I have to keep checking for clearance every time I raise or lower the engine.
