2021 Highlander pricing question

I priced a 2021 Highlander XLE V6 FWD using KBB and the fair market range for my area in GA is $36,400 - $39,500. I prepared my mind to pay $37,500.

The lowest price I can find in my area is $42,500 and the dealership won't reduce even 1 cent during my email/phone exchanges. Am I setting my expectation right for pricing or is my pricing unreasonable?

Does anyone have experience with Costco's no haggle pricing program? Thank you!

What's MSRP on the one you're looking at? If I build an XLE V6 FWD, it looks like MSRP is about $41,000 without any add-ons. Premium Audio adds $1,000, and then any accessories such as floor mats would be another few hundred dollars.

Based on that, $42,500 sounds like MSRP for one on the lot with Premium Audio and a bit more. There's no discount of any kind there unless that number is out-the-door with tax and any silly fees already included.

Your experience will vary based on where you're at and how bad the dealer wants to sell a car that day. $37,500 (before tax/title/etc.) sounds pretty reasonable to me on a $41,000 car. It might be at the low end of reasonable for one that starts over $42,000.

I tried Costco pricing. It was good price but I was able to get a better deal. I found that checking CarMax (has two new Toyota locations in the US) price by filling up "get your price" on their website is very helpful to establish a reasonable price target. I ended up getting about 16% off the MSRP for 2021 platinum AWD. Costco price was about 13% off the MSRP.

Mostreliable - I live i Florida and have been looking at Limited's in my state. Very limited selection in the color I want. And prices and incentives are lacking
So I put in the model I wanted with the Koons Toyota website. I was quite surprised at the money I could save with their WOW pricing. This is not an advertisement for them. But I may take a trip up north to purchase my HL.

Anybody care to comment on what are the negatives other than possible higher sales tax in buying out of state?

The sales tax and licensing fees are based on where you live, not where the selling dealer is located (except maybe in Comifornia, where they seem to be trying to tax everyone for everything, if you ever lived there, and forever).

The only obvious issues with buying out of state are extra costs, like your transportation costs, your hotel costs, your driving time back home, and of course the operational costs to drive home.

Of a bigger concern is once your physically there to buy the vehicle, your kind of stuck from the dealer's perspective, and an unscrupolus dealer could start playing "stupid dealer tricks" with extra add ons options, extra dealer fees, etc. I find that in general if I can get a set deal, with a written purchase contract from a dealer, on a specific vehicle, with complete OTD pricing, I can almost always take that "deal" to a local dealer who will beat it by $500 or better just to get the sale.

After all, in this scenario, from the local dealer's perspective, they've got an easy sale, all the hard work is done, they just need to close the deal, locate the vehicle for you, and they'll have a service customer for practically no effort on their part.

I purchased a 2021 XLE AWD for $33,800. But I got the Toyota employee discount on my car and traded in my 2013 Santa Fe Sport. I also financed it through NFCU.
Is it possible to get a Toyota employee discount without being an employee? Like a "friends and family" deal?

What was the price you paid for the XLE 2021 itself, and how much below MSRP was it?
Thanks,

Good Day Everyone,

I would greatly appreciate your opinion on a deal I just got. I was looking for a 2021 Highlander Platinum AWD, Blizzard Pearl, Harvest Beige interior. The extras that were added, Wheel Locks, Body side molding, All weather mats, cross bars roof rack and door edge guards. MSRP was $51,597.00 price paid $44,939.00 with the $1,000 cash back. Police and Fire Credit Union interest is 2.24% I'm on the East Coast (Philly)

$6658 off the MSRP that's equal about 13%. I would call this a good deal.

Shopping for a Highlander XLE AWD with tow package today. Figured we would get a better deal on the last day of the quarter. I am in SoCA. I found exactly what I wanted with MSRP price of $44,462, less customer cash incentive of $2000 bringing the price down to $42,462. I emailed the dealership and they said that does not include the 9.5% sales tax or the DMV tag. With that included the total price would be $47,061. It’s everything I’m looking for, even the color, celestial silver. How can I negotiate that price down? Seems like a lot, but maybe not considering it’s AWD with the tow package included.

I just looked on TrueCar and it lists the MSRP at $42,860. They estimate a 6.7% savings for the car at the dealership I’m looking at, putting the price between $42.7K-43.2K. The build I want doesn’t seem to be available at any other dealerships nearby, so I can’t do the competition game. I’ll add what I need for towing my travel trailer later.

Just so you know, my build wasn't available either. I wanted a white XLE AWD with beige interior BUT with a bench 2nd row. I also did not want a front tag added (not required in NC) or any dealer decals of any kind. Mine was in the pipeline and I had to wait a month or so to get it. Your dealers know what's in the pipeline. You also may find it easier to source if you drop the hitch requirement and install later. Like I said, I got mine for $41K out the door. Never met the dealer until I picked up the car, did the rest by web/email. Dealer was 100 miles away. Our auto taxes are only 3% in NC.

I checked out the Ken Hunter YouTube videos like SmoothRunnings suggested and see that this isn’t a great time to buy because the dealers know people have their tax return and stimulus checks. Prices are high!
I want the Highlander for towing the teardrop travel trailer I bought and I have a campsite booked for the end of May. I bought the wagon before the horse! I would rather have the second row bench seat but it’s not a deal breaker, and wish I could opt out of the 3rd row seat altogether so I would have maximum cargo space. I’ll guess I’ll wait and see if the price gets better on the silver XLE AWD. Thank you for your input mghoreth!

Went to the dealer the other day to assure buying genuine Toyota oil filters and only 2 of the dozen or so cars in his showroom had disappeared and had not yet been replaced.....plus over additional free spaces in a formerly filled new car lot. Huge best month ever poster on the wall.

Seems that the $1400/person COVID "stimulus" checks to assist lower income earners with food, rent, etc was all the excuse stimulus some recipients needed to immediately run out and use it for a down payment on a $40-50K vehicle. And seems phenomenon is not limited to cars either....on the way back I stopped in Walmart to buy the cheap $25/gal Mobil1 and all the flat screen televisions were gone and the display models on the shelves bore a NFS/sold out sticker.

Too bad for those who didn't get one because they will need it to help pay the huge tax increases coming which are necessary to pay for this "free stimulus" money.

Excuse me if I'm missing an newer thread, but 7 months later. What is everyone finding on pricing on the Highlander specifically the XLE. I love The Car Care Nut's videos and he is still insisting you should not pay more than MSRP. But it seems the 3 to 4 dealers i've shopped here are all going anywhere from 4 to 6 percent above MSRP.

It's hard to find a XLE for less than $47,000 list price. Which puts them over $50K out the door.

This thread was sort of a side discussion. The main pricing thread is over here (despite the title saying 2020), although it hasn't been very active lately.
