2023 XSE with E-CVT so disappointed...

So, I'm in the market for a new car. The Camry is/was at the top of my list. First time out to look today and found a spanking brand new 2023 XSE 2.5l E-CVT to drive sitting on the dealer lot. Looked close to what I was thinking I wanted., but when on the test drive, I noticed a slight hesitation when accelerating from a complete stop. My wife was with me and noticed it as well. Happened every time, ever so slight, but it's a no go for me. We bought a new 2007 SE with a CVT tranny and it drove me crazy to drive waiting for the tranny to catch up with the gas pedal that I won't buy another with a hesitation.
Question is - did I get a bad one, or they all react like this?
Am I going to find this in other vehicles with CVT's as it's 'the way they are'?
It doesn't look like I can build a 2023 without the E-CVT?
Thanks in advance.

It's called modern cars and they are all drive by wire. You could also get a throttle controller for around $40 will solve the problem. You don't feel it as much with the hybrid because the electric system kicks in immediately, but there is some lag of the ice kicking in when full their is demanded.

If that model has stop-start for fuel economy then THAT may be what you are describing. The engine shuts off when the vehicle stops under certain conditions. If that is what you felt then it may be common to new models of almost every car you would consider. The reason it is there is because 13% of all fuel consumed in the US today, by passenger vehicles, is used for idling engines which is unnecessary. The delay allows the engine to start and the transmission to be engaged. try other models of all manufacturers and you may see this is the "new normal".

This is just my opinion and it could be wrong but worth investigating.

What drive mode was it in? Eco? Normal? Because if you drove it in sport, it would respond much quicker.

There's also an inherent safety factory due to unintended acceleration.

e-CVT's are with hybrids. If you want a conventional automatic transmission, get a regular 2.5 non-hybrid or V6.

To answer the above questions, it wasn't a model that had the Start/Stop feature. Not that I was aware of anyway. It didn't seem to be shutting off.
I haven't bought anything yet, I was just out for a test drive.
On the question was it a Hybrid - no it wasn't, and because of your question - now I think I realize that I've was confused about what tranny it had, confusing ECT-i with ECVT....upon researching the dealer inventory and what I drove, it was the 8 sp ECT-i.....so thank you for the question, and apologies to all for my mistake - I haven't been in the car market for years...
The salesman never pointed out an Eco mode vs Sport mode....mot sure what mode I was in....

So now, I'm even more disappointed that the 8sp has a hesitation from a full stop, because I would prefer not having an ECVT, but can't live with a hesitation. I really had my heart set on a Camry, I like the styling....

So now my question is do the all 8sp have this hesitation and is it a design flaw? I like to move forward immediately when I push on the gas pedal, not like I pushed on it, let off and push on it again.....It's the only car I drove yesterday....it was the only new Camry they had, and I didn't get to another dealer yet....

They all have start stop. Again most modern cars have this lag, a pedal controller will fix it..

I had the 8-speed in the 2018 SE and had all those stupid hesitation issues. It got totaled and I replaced it with an XLE Hybrid with the eCVT (which is NOT a CVT, don't confuse it with all the other CVT hate, watch some youtube videos or something, its brilliant and not rubberbandy like others). The hybrid with the eCVT is AMAZING. Instant take off. Power is always there. No shifting. Smooth acceleration. While waiting for my Hybrid I was renting a Nissan Altima with a real CVT in it and it was intersting, no shifting, decent take off, but as it shifted power bands it felt "springy" and I totally get where people call CVTs the rubberband transmissions. The Toyota eCVT is not that.

I don't know to be honest. I didn't know there was a way to change it at the time.....I probably need to drive another, although, based on the comments, I'm considering a Hybrid now. My only concern with the Hybrid is the cost of battery replacement if needed.... I'll have to research some of that .... and levelset the fact that I rarely keep a car 10 years....

The Gen 8 overall is a great car. Of all the Camrys I've owned this is by far the best. However the 8 speed tranny has that sec hesitation. The 2019 I had it was real noticable. My current 22 is alot better but at times the hesitation is still there unless I change to the mode sport then it's great. If you decide to go with the ICE 4 cylinder use sport mode if you don't want lag then switch to eco or normal on the highway to maximize fuel saving. I can get 40 mph + on highway very easily even at 70. Clearly the 8 speed tranny is tunned for fuel economy above all else.
