New 6th Gen Camry Owner.... I'm in love! But just ONE annoyance.....

Hey everyone,

This is my first post here on Camry forums and my 2nd on Toyotanation after the welcoming forum area.... so I hope I am more than welcome here! I hope to contribute greatly to this forum and add some insightful information on Toyota's and possibly Scion and Lexus!

We just added our 4th current Toyota product to our family, a 2007 Toyota Camry XLE V6. We currently have an 05 Sienna LE, 09 Yaris, and a 14 Lexus CT200h. We are getting a 4th licensed driver so we feel this was a justified purchase.

And boy, is this car a sweetheart??!?!?!!!! I've always read on Toyota and Lexus forums about the praise of the 2GR-FE 3.5L V6.... and for a while, I thought this was a little hogwash and over spoken of, as we have the 3MZ-FE in our Sienna and it's a refined motor but isn't terribly quick; maybe 0-60 in a tick under 8 seconds on a good warm day with premium fuel and the tires at 40 PSI.

But boy, this Camry is a rocket; it has 122K miles and yet it still pulls 0-60 in about 5.8 seconds on mid-grade fuel! Just to be clear, this was the top of the line Camry in the 2007 so it does have Navigation and Push button start and I must say, the Nav is quite good even for an 8 year old car. The push button is exactly the same system in our CT200h so nothing new there but damn, the style of the car, room, fake wood trim, and leather are really nice; dare I say the leather is almost Lexus quality.

And the car runs A-1; the ONLY little imperfection is the dreaded 2GR-FE start up rattle with the VVT-i system. I've read almost every Toyota and Lexus forum that has written about this issue and from what I understand, it is just a start-up clatter due to metal-metal contact after the engine sitting for a while since the oil settles to the bottom of the cams. This only happens in maybe 1 in 5 start-ups but its there; and when it does happen, you can heart it for about 1-2 seconds.

Some people have had luck changing to fully synthetic oil or lower viscosity oil..... any other thoughts on this or anyone else with a Camry V6 or any other Toyota/Lexus with the 2GR-FE?? I'm not too worried since I had the car looked over and it is in pristine condition.... but still..... I want to hear!

And again, a warm welcome from me to this forum!

I have an 07 with 200 000km and it did the vvti clatter noise for 3 months and now its gone. I dont really know why - some guesses

1, I bought the car 9000km ago, I know the previous owner and dont think she was too careful to get all services done on time... she certainly didnt get oil changed at shorter intervals than recommended. In 9000 km I have done 2 changes with synthetic oil. Possibly its cleaner now or better quality oil helps?

2,it hapened in winter but it happened at cold start and even when the car had been sitting for under an hour so I suspect the cold was not a factor but it could be.

3 whatever was rattling has broken off and the engine will explode any day soon.

I suspect the first one but really have no good reason for thinking so
