people claim they get more mpg with synt so they think they are saving money somehow on gas but the cost of syth vs dino dosent add up to the mpg you save. honestly its just a waste of money and in some cases its not that great for your engine. seeing on syth oil is lighter if you have an older car its easier for it to leak of burn off witch it did in my 98 camry. just get yourself some toyota oil filters and mobile 5w-30 and youre all set
hmmm, is synthetic really more expensive ?
$15 for 5qts of dino (e.g. Castrol GTX +filter), max 3 mo / 3k miles
$29 for 5qts of synth (e.g. Mobil1 +filter), max 6 mo / 5k miles, some would say 10k is safe (never tried)
I believe that is per official oil change intervals unless I'm mistaken. proportions are clearly 1:2. synth is double price, double life time and at least double mileage.
somewhat depending on how we compare them, mileage-wise vs time-wise, but either way
synth comes up at the same price or CHEAPER ... unless I am totally wrong, then sorry.
also I hear opinions from mechanics that synthetic is actually better at lower/cold temps making cold engine to start smoother.
However I agree with a statement that synthetic should be avoided for old cars that used to run on dino all the time, especially if driver was not religious about oil change intervals. reason is that dino as mentioned above can cause sludge buildup faster than synth, so there might be already some deposits actually sealing old cracked seals. then once you switch to synthetic oil, some of those thicker particles might get solved or dislodged (like when you use engine cleaning additives to crankcase) - all of that may result in oil leaks after switch to synth on an old car.
My '00 Solara used to run on dino for all its life until last July when i switched it to Penzoil Platinum synth. I was lucky I guess or my religious attitude about oil change intervals paid off, all is well now running Mobil1 Full Synthetic, car runs like a charm.
