So I've got a 199 corolla le, it shakes starting at 55 ish mph, it's automatic but shifts into 2nd gear really roughly, like it jerks the car forward a little, and has little to no acceleration, it used to pull up codes for misfires on 3 cylinders until I replaces all 4 spark plugs, now it's pulling up misfires for cylinders 1 and 4, sometimes I can smell gas after I've driven long periods of time, and finally, sometimes my rpm gauge won't work at all, it'll just read 0 wnd won't show the outside temperature, I'm about to replace the fuel filter for the gas smell, and the spark plug wires to maybe fix acceleration.
My questions are: What's causing the poor acceleration? Why is the shift from first to second gear so rough? How can I get rid of the shaking? How can I fix my rpm gauge?

For your shaking issue, look at your tires first. Is the tread smooth or does it feel bumpy to the touch? Get the tires balanced and to proper air pressure. If it's still shaking, then it's a suspension component. Check your axles for grease leaking out of the CV boots. If there is grease, then it's due for axles. Shaking can also be struts beginning to fail or control arm bushings.

On the shifting, what transmission fluid are you using and when was the last time you did a drain and fill? When it was last serviced, did you do a transmission flush? Is the check engine light on for the transmission?

Does your corolla have abs? The vehicle speed sensor might have a damaged wire which is not recording vehicle speed. Is there a code for this?

Your shaking could be anything check the bearings in it too see if they have play. And check the tires to make sure they are in balance sometimes a weight will slip off or down. The misfire also maybe the coils and not the wires but it wouldn’t hurt to replace the wires as well. And yes check to see if the transmission fluid is full and clean, check it while the engine is running.

If you used anything other than denso or ngk plugs designed for your car that can also lead to power loss, misfires, bad acceleration...

If the shake starts at a speed and always at that speed 100% of the time. If I recall some 99s have an extra reservoir for tranny fluid I'm not very well versed on how to check by vin but search toyota nation for more info.

Welcome to the site rampage.

I suggest you make al ist of the symptoms you are experiencing, as there seems to be different things going on. Example:

  • Shaking at 55+ mph
  • Hard shift into 2nd gear
  • Cylinders x,y,z misfire
  • Cylinders 1,4 misfire

And on and on. Then in the next column write when you noticed the symptom. In the next indicate what had changed in the car, if anything (this will be useful when you shifted from 3 misfires to 2), and then start listing what you have tried or will try based on typical approaches (check tire balance, check hub, check engine mount, etc.). You need to start with one symptom and focus on that. Some things may be linked so solving one thing may solve another.

I have minimal mechanical repair experience but have been around vehicles for 45 years since high school auto shop and the first thing I'd do with power loss is to check engine compression. And log it and track it once every 4 years or so or 50,000 miles. It's a direct link to performance. Are you blowing any smoke, consuming oil, what did your spark plugs look like, the look of the plugs can tell you a lot. Your hard shifting could be because of your poor engine performance, how many miles are on the engine, if it's close to 300,000, I wouldn't spend to much trying to fix the tachometer, for one thing it's an automatic, it's kind of a glitter item to me, not necessary, I would spend my time doing something else than fixing a tachometer on a automatic car. If you want to do a tachometer repair, I'd do a wire trace, starting at the motor. What's the history, did you own it before you got the miss fire codes? Was there anything that happened to the vehicle before the problems?

I like rich_d and SFCamry ideas.
