Adding power door lock

Has anyone tried adding power door locks to a Tacoma? I have manual locks and would really like power locks. The OEM actuators are super expensive. Ebay shows a kit for $20-$30. One option is more than it is worth and the other option looks too good to be true. On my old Chev Metro the actuator was there but not hooked up so it was just a matter of adding a switch. Not so lucky on my Toyota.

Door locks with rod-actuated mechanisms are simple to convert to auto locks. Unfortunately, the Tacomas have cable-actuated mechanisms. Can be done, just a little more work. Check A-1 Electric. They have several kits and have very good videos of how to install a kit in a cable-operated vehicle. I installed one of their power window kits and have really enjoyed it. I was planning to do the door locks, but never got to it.
Good luck! TexasJim

Welcome to the forums! :)

One option would be to source some OEM parts from a wrecked Tacoma and install that into yer Tacoma. It might take a little work on yer end to git all the parts and wiring hooked up. How much are you looking to spend? ;)

Does anyone know what would be involved in wiring on a 2013? I do not see a problem with the mechanical installation but I am a little concerned about the electrical. I am only interested in the power lock and the remote sender. A-1 has a kit that will do that plus starter, lights etc. There are wires going into the door so I would assume that 12 volts is already available inside the door. There is a sender unit with the A-1 kit which apparently is installed inside the drivers door so that would take care of the drivers side but the passenger door is supposed to work at the same time so I am not sure how it is signaled. The only wiring diagram I have is in the Haynes manual which tells me nothing other than some wire goes into some unknown connector which goes into some unknown module. I would be interested in doing this if it does not involve stringing a bunch of wires under the dash etc. If there are wires already available it sounds pretty easy but if I have to get into a lot of wiring it looks less appealing.

This is a stupid question, having not been in a lot of other Tacomas. Without power locks, how are your rear doors locked? When you unlock drivers door, does turning it back a second time not unlock the other doors?

Going back to power locks, and assuming keyless remotes as an option.

On the '06, looks like all the door controls come out of the Body ECU, which looks to be above the drivers left knee. Since 2 of the 4 doors are identical, one under dash splice into existing wiring should cover those two. Power to a motor, reverses voltage to lock and unlock (2 wires).

For the front two, passenger has 5 wires going from ECU to the door, plus a ground. One of those goes to a detection switch, (code for door light switch I think)

Driver has 5 as well ( not the same 5 ) plus a ground.

The wireless receiver adds 3 more.

Might be easier and cleaner to talk to an alarm shop, ask how much to add an alarm and power locks at the same time.
