Would I be able to put an alternator from a 3rd Gen 2.2 onto a 4th gen 2.2? Are there any big differences?

Cost might be the same or less.

For me when I went with a highlander 130amp alternator for my 98 V6, it was actually cheaper than the actual one for the Camry. Fits like a charm. It was just a tad bigger, but no filament issues.

As long as the connections are the same, it should bolt on with no modifications needed.

Kingdom934, please can you give more info about the alternator you use and your car? What's the part # of the highlander alternator? Which year/brand? Was your 98 an XLE model? Did you make a diy on it or do you have any pictures? I'd love to do this, but don't want to invest in the wrong alternator. Thanks .

When my 3rd GEN (1992 Camry XLE) alternator gave out at 234,000 miles I investigated into a salvage yard one.

The issue with mine was that my Camry came from Japan (JT Vin number) such that the original alternator was a 70-AMP rated alternator (Japan made). The salvage yard had one for 80-AMP capacity (USA Made).

I called the Dealer and they told me that the 80-AMP would be okay and being that its an XLE trim they recommended the higher AMP capacity anyway.

Of course the salvage yard alternator lasted about one year and 80K miles later and it died. I went with a brand new one and it is still there and my Camry now has 485,900 miles so, the new one has 251,820 miles on it!:surprise: Amazing auto parts item!

I would check with the Dealer while you supply them with the specific VIN numbers so, they can check exactly what came with each car so, you can get an accurate determination in answering your question.

The only alternator failures I have had with Densos are the brushes which wear out in normal operation. They are easy to change and cost less than 15 bucks. If the bearings go, or a diode, that's a different story. There are some good rebuilders out there who can sell you a Denso rebuilt good for for 120 amps for whole lot less than a new one. Just google "high output alternator". They are popular with the big stereo set. I've also found that a 12 gauge ground wire from the alternator body to the frame helps flickering light problems.

Installed the Toyota Highlander 130amp alternator. The Highlander 130amp alternator is from the 1MZFE V6 3.0L engine. The 130amp was a package for the towing model IIRC from my readings. I searched using a Toyota Highlander 2003 V6 1MZFE model.

Either way, an upgrade from the 80amp to 130amp.

It was a Napa Power Premium Plus. Part # RAY 2139427 It has to be a 6 groove pulley and not the 7 one.

It was a plug n play setup. I transferred the bracket for the plasti clip that the alternator cables attach to and had to bend it just a little. I had to go and loosen the bolts more after I removed the original alternator to put in the upgraded 130amp one in.

Start it up and car idles back to normal. Checked voltage and I'm reading around 13.75~v while idle hot.

This worked on a 1MZFE V6. It won't work for the 5SFE.
