Hi everyone,
I'm parking up my 2023 Corolla Hybrid for a month in winter (southern hemisphere), and bought a NOCO Genius 5 to use as a battery charger to maintain the 12v battery.
Now, the NOCO instructions advise connect the red clip to the positive terminal, and the negative clip to a bolt or something on the car chassis. This seems fine. However, in the Toyota Corolla manual, it also mentions that you should: "disconnect the ground cable from the battery prior to charging" (and doesn't provide advice with where to connect the charging negative point). To be clear, the Toyota manual says disconnect the ground cable, but not the entire negative terminal assembly. When undoing the grounding cable bolt it gets a little sparky.
Now, I'm uncertain whether I should still connect the black negative clip to the chassis, or now to the battery negative terminal? The NOCO instructions don't accommodate this variation.
1. Is it actually necessary to disconnect the grounding cable?
2. If so, where then do you connect the black negative clip?
3. Lastly, I've read a lot about the production of hydrogen gas during battery charging, is that a genuine issue with trickle chargers?
