Both Odometer and Trip Odometer stopped working

I thought I was about ready to start doing some fun projects on the old Camry, but true to being the "Whac-A-Mole", today I pushed in to reset the trip odometer and now have lost it's function and also the odometer. I tried resetting the trip odometer several more times and even driving the car in reverse, but it made no difference
The speedometer and tach both continue to work normal.

I've been searching / reading some old threads and it appears that there are 3 capacitors on the circuit board that drives the odometer and that if one or more of them fails it could be causing this condition.

I'd be interested in if you think it will be worth trying to examine and replace a bad capacitor(s) or just go to the boneyard and get an entire instrument cluster for replacement and hope it all works. Would any of the 92-96 instrument panels be a direct swap or do I have to be alert for changes b/t the V6 and my I4 cylinder engine?

Also, I didn't see any possible instrument panel upgrades in the DIY section (for Gen 3) so I assume the 1st gen. Lexus panel is not plug and play in the Gen 3 Camry; or it doesn't have much more to offer?

(I do know if I replace the panel with one from another car that it must be disclosed to another buyer. That is not something I'm concerned about because I've got so much time and money into this machine that it's not going anywhere.)

You talking about these caps?

Maybe you could swap the circuit board that way you won't have to mess with the odometer to match mileage.

Looks like 4 solder points and 4 metal tabs.

Scratch that the 4 large terminals don't need to be desoldered the pins on the odo motor do. Once that's done the board pulls off, also the motor can be removed easily. Maybe that's what failed on your car either way if you can solder then this is not hard to repair.

edit - might be able to pull the whole board off without desoldering anything but it could be hard to bend both tabs at once.

My friend's 1995 LE V6 trip finally died. It doesn't roll. Odo still works...for now.

Guess after 325K, it got tired. Damn it Toyota, why they make the trip fail before the engine and trans ;)

If I pull the instrument panel out of the car, would there be any long term problems created if continued to drive while I am sourcing and awaiting replacement capacitors or another instrument panel?

Anyone know if the car will start and run ok without an instrument panel?

Good point, that I didn't even think about. However, in my case the airbag light is on all the time anyway so that will make no difference.

That reminds me it might be a good time to take out that airbag light bulb so I can remove the black tape on the front of the lens that covers it up now.
