Broken gps touch screen in 04 highlander -- dealer wants $6600 to fix!@#$%^&*^$#@!!

Hi,

I'm trying to find out how to fix a non-functioning touch screen in my 04 Toyota Highlander. Most of the time, the screen does not respond to inputs, but the mechanical buttons around the screen still work. The dealer wants an obscene amount of money to fix this problem. Apparently this defect has been known for years (and was corrected in the 05 model). I'm paying tuition for two kids in college and there is no (*&^%$ way I can afford thousands of dollars to fix this problem on a car with 100k miles. Any suggestions?

Best buy.

As in, go to Best Buy & get a Garmin Nuvi 255W or similar on sale for under $100.

:dunno:

I dunno what else to say; you are right - it's in the "old vehicle" class. $6K is stupid for a $100 electronic toy.

Until you have time to score one from a wrecker & rip apart your dash, there is your interim solution...

Just yank it out and have it replaced with a new stereo - Pioneer, Panasonic and others make double din replacements that have built in GPS and DVD and that will fit in that spot. Find a good customer audio shop and they can replace it for you with something much better at a way lower cost. Almost all OEM factory Nav systems are high priced junk - don't pay super high cost to replace obsolete factory junk.

Ouch - forgot about that - I think your gonna have to get a new part and get it repaired. Time for you to talk to some Toyota parts guys and do some searching and calls on the internet. See if that specific year HL touch screen is the same part as for any other models (if any). For instance the HL screen you need may be the same part as on a Avalon, 4runner, Camry, Prius. If it is a shared screen with any other models it makes it slightly easier to find.

Then search online discount Toyota parts sources and also online junkyard sites to see if you can find a used or heavily discounted replacement screen. You can pay Toyota dealer labor to install but you can likely source the part yourself way cheaper.

Once repaired you may want to sell the car before this happens again.

Hi again

There is a user on clublexus forum - DC Fish - see this thread here:

Maybe he can help? The Lexus may share the same part as the highlander...
I wouldn't post your email on openly the forum, but you could join their forum & send him a PM.

Let us know if he can hook you up with a rebuilt screen, or a cheaper fix, if you don't mind.

:)
