If you just bought the car, take it to the dealer. Have them fix it or file legal actions.

based on what I read from others, it takes around 5-7 seconds until it does start and that won't hurt. The reason for the problem seems to be that not enough fuel gets into the chambers, so there isn't any flooding which could in the long term do damage to the catalytic.

And yes, the dealer should take care of it.

My XRS seems fine and no starting issues.

 

I think it only hurts the starter for cranking too long.

 

5-7 seconds? I'd hope they build the starters that they can handle that. Shouldn't be doing damage.

The XRS shouldn't have the same problem, it's a different engine. The only starting issue with the XRS that I know of is that the clutch has to be fully engaged when you crank. Otherwise they do not have the warm engine problem.

5-7seconds, thats nothing, what do you expect, your car to start off the moment you twist the key? Doesnt sound like a problem to me, sounds normal. Takes several >10sec cranks to start the rolla with the webers, and takes atleast 5sec to start the nissan on a cold day.

The AE92 starter has been rated to last 45seconds of continuous starting, after that the only problem you get is that the wires start getting too hot, so you'd melt the insulation, other than that, the starter wont be the first thing to break.

 

5-7 seconds is too long for any modern car to be cranking to start, under normal conditions. If it was well below zero then that would be semi acceptable. But for a 05 Corolla it shouldn't take that long. Heck my 97 would start after 3 seconds. As far as engine wear. Well that's debatable. In the long run sure your starter is taking more wear than it should but if you're not planning on keeping your car long that it wouldn't be an issue. But something is wrong with the 05's and it's no secret any more :thumbdown
