I have a 2004 Scion xa and my check engine light came on for about a week (not the maintenance light) & I made an appointment with Toyota. the day before I went in the light came off. They checked it anyway, & it my report says:
"Had 3 evap codes. suspect gas cab was left loose. cleared codes." the codes were po446, po442, po440. my manual says the maintenance light comes on if my gas cap is loose. Toyota said my car's fine... but the warranty comes up in 3 months & so am wondering if anyone has experience in this.. or knows about the error codes. I am trying to research to see what the codes mean?
Any help would be very helpful!! Thanks :).

Look out for Rust

Not a Scion, but a member of the Toyota family, my 98 Camry was getting intermittent Code PO446 indications which I would trouble shoot and then turn out the light to see if it worked. After a month or so, it would come back. Finally had to gas the thing up (it is my wife's car) and noticed all sorts of rust on the mouth of the gas tank filler. There was definitely enough there to affect the seal. Cleaned off the rust from the filler mouth and from the rubber seal on the cap and after a month, the check engine light is still out. Definitely an inexpensive fix. It looks like Toyota didn't figure that component needed plating.
I've noticed all sorts of Toyota products with recalcitrant problems in this area (Code PO446). The effect of rust on the filler mouth is the same as a bad or loose filler cap. I hope this info helps someone.

check engine light P043E code

I have a 2006 Scion xA with 43K miles. My check engine light came on. The dealership told me that the P043E code popped up. They said that this means there is a leak in the charcoal cannister.

They said that my car is no longer under warranty and it would take 3 hours of labor to replace the part.

ColchesterScion, Doublecheck that code. It should probably be one of the following codes:
P0440EVAP Control System.
P0441EVAP Control System Improper Purge Flow.
P0446EVAP Control System Vent Control.
P0450EVAP Control System Pressure Sensor.
P0451EVAP Control System Pressure Sensor Range/Performance.
The code you are reporting is missing a number. If it isn't readable on the report the Dealer gave you, give them a call.

Some 2006 model year Scion xA vehicles may exhibit M.I.L. “ON” with DTCs P043E,
P043F, P2401, P2402, and P2419 stored..........................All five DTCs MUST be present for this TSB to be applicable

This repair is covered under the Toyota Federal Emission Warranty. This warranty is in
effect for 36 months or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle’s

Don't overfill and make sure gas cap is on tight

Don't overfill with gas and make sure gas cap is on very tight at all times. I have an '01 Avalon and '03 Sienna, both with over 140K miles (great vehicles!) but they both will through up PO441, 442, 446 error codes along with VSC disabled and check engine idiot lights if the gas cap is loose. Disconnecting battery will reset (and delete) all error codes and clear the check engine light, VSC, etc. idiot lights on the dash.
